But for a "general purpose game engine" I recommend Godot Game Engine.
Basically whatever Unity can do, Godot also can do.
And best of all, Godot is both gratis & libre open source.

I did a thing! Been playing around with game development using the Godot gaming engine. Following a tutorial. Basic but it's helping me learn how to do this cool stuff. Maybe I'll build my own 2D video game with it!

Decided to try and level up my skills even more and have embarked on an exciting side project. This does, however inlvolve the daunting task of learning Blender. Day 2 into it and I think I'm pretty close to getting my new character's design down
