#geohashing
[Note from DanQ.me]

With Storm Bert raining off our plans for geohashing in Co. Limerick, my mother and I are off into a forest in Co. Tipperary in search of a hashpoint over this way. It’s still pretty wet though. ×

In that fleeting moment when geohashing was a thing (xkcd's system of randomly-generated geocache locations all over the world), the second time I went to one, it landed inside this cloverleaf

We went to Sturges Park and called it close enough. Someone brought Blokus.
The northern junction of 93 and 95.

The sinister cousin of the previous intersection, this one has this perfect cloverleaf that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, and mostly just stares impassively as you hurtle off in the wrong direction.

Lawful neutral.

[Geocaching log from DanQ.me]

My mother and I are visiting the area in search of virgin graticules for geohashing purposes. This morning we set out for the 2024-11-22 53 -8 geohashpoint and found it down in a disused pasture down in the valley, then we decided to celebrate by seeing if there […]

I went geohashing today and saw @adamchase.bsky.social and @thewheatgerm.bsky.social of @jetlagthegame.bsky.social at the Nürnberg Hbf. I just said hi and scurried off because they, like myself, looked stressed out from being Deutsche Bahned. Good luck on finding/chasing/running from Sam, guys!

On our first full day in Ireland, my mother and I found our way to a hashpoint in a virgin graticule, by stomping our way through an overgrown abandoned pasture.

Always latitude and longitude. Geohashing services based on eastings and northings are unreliable

2. Find weighted centroid of biggest cluster

Geohashing is still, surprisingly, a thing. More than 18,000 expeditions, 50-100 per month. See geohashing.win.
