The grey clouds are gone and it looks like sunshine all the way with a heatwave forecast, so our patch needs watering morn and night. However, things are doing well and I found a half dozen again - with one outsider. Captions in alt text.

A Butterfly bush in a neighbour’s garden continues to bloom as she deadheads each day; one of our Cosmos flowers; an Angelica by our path and the Salvia Rock and Bloom that has flowered all summer.

Had a great time at the RHS Hyde Hall Flower Show yesterday. The rose garden at Hyde Hall was looking every inch the picture of quintessential English summer, and the old barn was open and serving afternoon teas. #goodtimes

OK, I said no more tulips but I was taking in the bins this morning and just couldn’t resist one last photo of these as I came back. Sorry.
Two terracotta pots, one beige, the other blue, containing orange and red tulips stand in an area in front of a terrace cottage. The shadows of a trellis fence can be seen to the left across the paving slabs in front of a partially open light-green front door. To the right of the door there is a small ironwork lantern, house number and slate sign in Welsh with a dragon reading Croeso or Welcome. Around the corner of the porch is a brass bell next to a window and below that a clematis is beginning to climb a frame. Under the other window a Wintersweet. Above is a climbing Hydrangea petiolaris, yet to flower.

Little stars … the Periwinkle or Vinca herbacea gives great ground cover. The zinging purple flowers seem to glow in the Spring sunshine against the green leaves. Beware, though, they can take over. They have thuggish tendencies.

Our Sunflowers, grown from a free packet of seeds, are looking a bit raggedy, maybe as a result of the constant attentions of the bees. However, as this was the object of planting them, we can’t complain.

This little gem of a double Narcissus was planted along with other bulbs in a pot on our patio last year and did nothing. I left it alone and this week’s sun has persuaded it to bloom. The name tag has faded, so no ID.

The first day of Spring and temperatures of 19°C, so we visited nearby Arts and Crafts house Standen in the care of the National Trust. So many William Morris designs and fine furniture plus gardens beginning to bloom.
An imposing house with tall chimneys towers above a vegetable garden that has been carefully tended and awaits early growth. Five terracotta pots used to force rhubarb plants stand on a soil bed casting shadows in the Spring sunshine. To the right of the first pot, a rhubarb plant appears above the ground. An old tree, that is supported by props, is still growing from shoots on the horizontal branches despite the trunk being hollowed out. The overall effect is of a giant porcupine. In the foreground a row of primroses edges a dirt path and overhead there is a cloudless blue sky. A hip bath stands ready on a rug in front of a fireplace with a brown watering can used to top up hot water standing to one side. The Arts and Crafts designed fireplace is surrounded by William Morris wallpaper. White towels hang ready on a rail to one side and on the other a cabinet’s mirrored door reflects an armchair.
