At Ramana Ashram, Tiruvannamalai, the Matrubhuteswara Shrine is dedicated to Ramana Maharshi's mother, Azhagammal, and houses deities symbolising the divine feminine and cosmic principles. Daily pujas, including the special Sri Chakra Puja, are performed here, especially on Fridays and full moon days. On the north side of the shrine is the statue of Maa Durga signifying divine feminine power (Shakti), representing strength, courage, compassion, and protection against evil, embodying the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe, protecting devotees from negativity and adversity, and granting spiritual knowledge and vitality.

This beautiful, intricate figure shows the Hindu goddess Durga at her triumphant defeat of the demon buffalo, Mahisha.

This sculpture comes from Eastern India (Bengal) or Bangladesh and was carved as a statue placed within a shrine. Durga was a warrior goddess, created by the male deities specifically to defeat the demon Mahisha, who could not be killed by any male god. She is depicted with multiple arms (this figure has 16), each holding a different weapon. Mahisha assumed the form of a buffalo in his (futile) final attempt to escape Durga. This figure shows Durga’s moment of triumph, with the buffalo beheaded at her feet as the demon flees the body. Durga is usually shown with a lion or tiger and here her lion is biting the toes of the demon. The intricately carved stone sculpture was made during the Pala-Sena period in which great advancements were made in the arts, education and architecture. In addition to being a warrior goddess, Durga is also a protector of humanity; the story of her defeat of Mahisha is a classic tale of good triumphing over evil.

The latest draft of my "Columbia in the style of a Hindu goddess" poster. It's a complex composition, but centered, in a jharoka, against a pastel nebula, is the goddess Columbia, with six additional arms, carrying various objects and making gestures. She stands against the yantra of the goddess Durga, which glows in the background Below this is an eight-line chant, an adaptation of the Battle Hymn of the Republic in Sanskrit, complete with dandas and numbering. Above her is the title: Deviranagita, "The Battle Hymn of the Goddess." The shirorekha of the title forms a single-line border frame, which also serves as the shirorekha of the usual signature for my posters, in Hindi: Baker & Godwin, Printers, Printing-House Square, across from City Hall, New York. In the margins, written in pencil, Hindi renderings of "Who now shall be the paladins of the goddess?" and "How long must they kick us before we shall all be Wide-Awakes?"
