I was getting annoyed at the seagulls being blown into my photos by the gale, little blurry blobs flying so fast I couldn’t freeze them in shot without crazy ISO, but now I realise that they portray the reality of being in that storm. Feel the wind in your hair through a photo!

My home sickness is strong today🥺. I crave the feeling of the sun beaming down on me as I frolick amongst castle ruins, tracing stories & echoes of bygone times wedged between every crack & crevice. Hopefully I'll be able to answer the call of home soon❤️ #castlesky #medievalsky

Archaeologists discovered a stone barbican at Chichester castle a few days ago. Previously the castle was thought to have been built of wood and timber only.

The oldest castle in Europe that still stands is Château de Doué-la-Fontaine, in France. Its stone keep was built around the year 950.

This is a view of the dig site from the top of the motte. Behind is Chichester Guildhall, the surviving 13th century chancel from the Franciscan friary. Quite possibly it contains masonry robbed from the former castle. (Infra red photograph.)

On Saturday I visited the archaeological excavations of Chichester castle. They have uncovered the foundations of a substantial stone barbican built in the moat. Previously it had been assumed that the castle was built of wood, on substantial earthworks.
