Just like, “friend I went to school for this and did ‘assignments’ that were Solely Drawing Lines Equally Spaced Apart and Manually Duplicating Existing Art By Eye” (which were super cool!). This is practice. And not even making perfection(!), just making competency.

Such highly finished drawings by Hackert, younger brother of Jakob Philipp Hackert (whose Waterfall of Marmore at Terni is nearby), are extremely rare. The Hackert brothers were among the first Romantic artists to adopt the practice of drawing and painting en plein air in Rome. Italians were amazed when they saw the artists roaming the countryside with large portfolios, executing finished outline drawings entirely from nature. This drawing accurately represents an aqueduct built in the middle of the 18th century in southern Italy. The degree of finish, meticulous detail of the vegetation and rocks in the foreground, recession of space, and subtle treatment of light are astonishing.

Met Museum photo of an Ancient Egyptian artist’s painting of a swallow on a flake of limestone, dated to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, c. 1479-1458 BC. The sparrow stands in profile with head to the right. It is delicately painted with a pinkish body. The outline and details are highlighted in a reddish/brown pigment. Its legs, eye, and beak are painted black. Limestone flake dimensions Height 6.6 cm x Width 10.6 cm. This may have been a practice drawing of the sparrow hieroglyph which was used for words meaning ‘small’, ‘poor’, or ‘bad’. Egyptian artisans who decorated tombs and temples made practice sketches on flakes of limestone which are known by egyptologists as ostraca (singular: ostracon). Sometimes the drawings were used as a template when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available for this purpose as by-products of the construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of ostraca were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations.

Before beginning a large-scale painting such as The Biglin Brothers Turning the Stake, Eakins began a series of specialized studies. He outlined the space of the composition with perspective drawings, such as this sketch in graphite. Eakins also used figure studies when rendering a work, as well as landscape and architectural drawings and his own photographs (examples of which are elsewhere in the exhibition). The practice of using perspective drawings to work out the space of a painting dates back to the Renaissance, revealing Eakins’s academic training.

head of a man in 3/4 view, turned slightly toward PR, looking up; neutral mouth; multicolors Drawing was fundamental to the artistic practice of Oskar Kokoschka, whose work was expressionist in its tendency to communicate internal emotional states rather than outward appearances. Some 5,000 drawings by the artist survive. Colored chalk was a favorite medium, and he deployed it in nervous lines. This drawing harks back to a self-portrait that he made in the early 1920s, which he called "Self-portrait from Two Views." He traveled extensively in his later career and gave many of his sketches to the friends he made along the way. As the inscription shows, this study was given to Minneapolis author and philanthropist Rosalynd C. Pflaum (1917–2014), whom the artist met on one of at least three visits he made to Minnesota.

If I can make a game work with my headset and I can upload a custom map to a game, then I can transport my living room to whatever game I want.” The first episode in KG’s series offers a look into how she painted WHSPRS: (Video) “When the interviewee sits down I'll talk to them while painting them. This first episode featured some blind contour drawings and one experimental acrylic painting. WHSPRS, my guest, is a virtual musician-turned-rock star who is also part of the furry community.” KG says the art practice she’s exploring doesn’t have a formalized name — “its artists are still sorting that out “— but “Immersivism” is one of the terms associated.
