🐊 Why were reptiles often excluded from cognitive research? Not for lack of abilities — but because of bias, logistics, and old assumptions.
EvOCRO studies crocodiles to rethink how cognition evolves across species.

Parrots playing good Samaritan? In lab tests, African greys passed tokens to help a partner score treats, with no payoff for themselves. What does that say about avian empathy? #AfricanGreyParrot #Altruism #AnimalCognition #ProsocialBehavior #TokenExchange
Do African Grey Parrots Help Each Other Without Reward?
Yes. In a controlled 2020 study, African grey parrots voluntarily passed metal tokens to a partner so the partner could exchange them for food, even when the helper could not get a reward. The behavior meets the definition of prosocial helping and was not seen in a comparison macaw species in the same setup (Current Biology). What is the African grey parrot helping study?

There are 12,000+ reptile species worldwide.
They’re the second most species-rich vertebrate group, yet among the least studied.

Looking beyond classic models is key to understanding how cognition evolves.

Particularly gifted dogs can learn new words that label their toys by overhearing their owners talking with each other, and link it to a new toy even when the word and toy are not presented simultaneously.

(Easy-to-replicate experiment with one's own🐕- imo)

Animal cognition studies how animals acquire, process, and use information to adapt. And it is not exclusive to humans.
Understanding animal minds helps us understand evolution itself. 🐊🧠

A female wolf has been doing something unusual on the Central Coast of British Columbia. She's learned to pull crab traps up from the water, yanking on a rope to bring it to the surface. But is it tool use? Very fun story from @phiejacobs.bsky.social for @science.org
