Cheers to the friends that science has given me!

I came to Padua to give a small seminar, and my time here has been amazing 💜

I have learned so much ✨

Scientists wanted to know if dogs could one day talk—here’s what they found
Tamás Faragó told Newsweek: "We should look at their behavior, how they interact with humans and how they live together with us."

📢Meet us!!

Paula @paulapefraga.bsky.social is a postdoctoral researcher on the behaviour team.
She is interested in animal–human communication and emotions. Her research explores how physiology, vocalizations, and behaviour connect.

You can easily find her hiking in the mountains with her dogs.

📢Meet us!!

We’re kicking off our intro series with our PI, Tamás Faragó, PhD, @tamsa42.bsky.social who founded BARKS Lab.🎉

Fascinated by canine vocal communication, during his career Tamás studied growls, barks, whines...

Now, he is exploring vocal learning in dogs, the core of our research!

Could dogs ever talk? New review weighs science, ethics and evolution
A new scientific review tackles an age-old question: could dogs ever learn to talk? While barking out full sentences might sound like science fiction, researchers are taking a closer look at the biological and technological possibilities behind enhancing canine communication.

My amazing team members💞
Last Friday the Dept. of Ethology held the Dog Ethology Conference 🐾 for the owners who volunteer in our studies.

Our postdoc Rita Lenkei spoke about our review of “Talking Dogs,” PhD student Balázs Szigeti volunteered, and PhD student Franceska Furik was in the organizing team.

💞💞 Dogs are Amazing 💞💞

Congrats to my dear friend @asommese.bsky.social and the Gifted Dog's team for this achievement.
Excited to share the latest (but still not the last!) study I had the chance to work on with the Family Dog Project 🐶🇭🇺

We found that Gifted Word Learner dogs' talent goes beyond what we expected; they can generalise words based on function, not just looks.

We need to collectively stop legitimizing predatory journals like the MDPI and "Frontiers" journals: don't give them your labor and don't send manuscripts to them (and certainly don't pay them!). I also have been trying my best to remove them from class syllabi as well. 4/4

Congrats to my amazing co-authors 💞❤️
Our first paper is out!!🐕🎤

Talking dogs? How realistic is it?
We explore the scientific, cultural, and technological aspects of speech-like communication in dogs, and argue that while they excel at human-directed communication, spoken language may not be feasible or even desirable.

We tested the sensitivity to human ostension in three pig populations with varying levels of human exposure.

The best part of this project was meeting people who are now friends for life.
