It's here: there is a serious issue here about #accentism, methinks

Ah, thank you. That's true, yes, about the written tradition, although I hope that's changing now.
I didn't know about the name, that's amazing.
Accentism was everywhere. I'll be glad if we can get rid of that.

People of colour "othered" & seen as "perpetual foreigners". We're not ever seen as native to Canada. We can't speak our heritage language because we're anglophone. Stuck in btw 2 worlds.

If we're newcomers to Canada, accentism blocks hiring.

These hiring practices is in #cdnpoli in both posts. /2

And that's before you even look at the wider context around accentism, class, power and ethnicity. It's quite easy to see acts of accentism as one-off incidents of personal prejudice but they're tied to systems, to power and colonial and classist histories.

Only 2 lessons today, on the topic of accentism, but I'm going to try and do a bit more translation in between. And there's end of month admin stuff.
Weather grey and uninteresting.
No sign of the squirrel for a few days.
Hope everyone's well, and best wishes for a Happy Monday!

I have 2 friends, one of whom has a strong working-class London accent, and one who doesn't. For the longest time, the latter thought the former was stupid, despite a lot of evidence to the contrary, and I can only assume that was because of his accent.
Accentism of any kind is a curse.
In a recent match, Exeter City football manager Gary Caldwell was sent off for the second time this season - a decision he blames on his Scottish accent. But what does the research say?

Dr Amanda Cole explores in this post for @theconversation.com.

Are Scottish accents really more aggressive? A linguist explains
The way we feel about an accent tells us less about its integral properties and much more about the stereotypes of the people who speak it.

Accentism remains remarkably robust in the Uk. This report confirms similar research over the last 60 years or so. And as a proud Scouser, it does me ‘ed in!

Accentism can shape perceptions and opportunities in profound ways. As Amanda Cole notes, "When a person is treated a certain way because of their accent, they are actually being treated this way because of their race, class, gender."

The clip is funny (to some) because it's kind of true (for many) and it's a perfect reminder to interrogate thoughts like this.

Right now in the U.S., accentism is no laughing matter.

Everyone has an accent.

Accentism is a lousy phenomenon. Curiously, I was a victim of it when I first went to primary school in Edinburgh in 1971.
My parents were English, so I had what was basically an RP accent, and I discovered on my first day at school that that was a Very Bad Thing. 1/2

True, but accentism appears to be something of a problem at some high-tariff universities such as Durham and, here, York.

It’s not racism anymore. It’s accentism.
