"I think I understand why people keep journals now in this place. It's not so you can't remember things - there's no way I can forget - but so that when you're dead and gone, nothing but dust, there's a hint of memory remaining behind for the fantastic, the horrific, the insane, the glorious. How else would you believe that playing a game of Uno would end up with you in bed with three gorgeous women? That stepping outside a door you didn't open would show you the black fingers of the River of Time running across the sky? That standing your ground with your blade and pistol at a gate against the world made of meat come to life would end with you sitting in a bar, singing with your friends who'd never lived the events of their own deaths? Where finding all these other journals would give you the spoilers for disasters and victories in your own life that hadn't happened yet? So, I'm writing this all down in this book. Not because I want to remember, like I said, but so that when you, whomever you are, read this, you know how to make your own stories. And more than likely when I read this myself in some unknowable future past, I can stretch out my hand through the meta and say 'you are not alone. none of us are.'"

A scrabbling at the gates; a shout, a clang! Erik threw open the shutter, waved his torch into the black, called out, "Who goes there?" Another clang; then a scream, sharp as short. He called again, louder: "Friend or foe?" "Friend!" The voice came small, shaking from another spot in the dark below. "Name yourself." 'Twas his duty to be sure. "I'm, I'm-" it swelled, hushed, swelled anew. "I'm scared! It's coming, they're coming. Where be all your hunters?" "Hunting." He swung down his torch and squinted. At the edge of his light, something huddled to the bottom of the pickets. Still, to be sure, "Name yourself!" "Sallant! I'm Sallant." The voice came from the huddled thing, indeed. "It was right behind me! Couldn't see, only hear. Half a score, maybe more. Please! Before they come back!" That was enough. "Sallant. You are so named. You are so bound. You will do no mischief within." "I will, I will! Please, just open the gates!" "Be through, quick!" Erik pushed back from his porthole and clasped the shutter, and slotted his torch back to the wall. The mechanism was old and heavy, but hardy—and hardly ever failed. He cranked the winch by hands and back and knees, and turn by turn the gate beyond did rattle and moan and rise from its holes. One. Two. Three. Four! And then he let go, and the gatehouse shook with the crash. At the bottom of the steps, at the edge of the road, he met Sallant. The man nay looked much from the door: a muddle of cloak and rags. Yet, as he neared, and the light of the door-candle made him more clear, Erik saw more and more. Between the rips in those rags—little scraps of steel; beneath the dangle of that cloak, more than foot and boot. But it could not be a creature of the night, aye? They did not have names to give. Erik tucked his fingers tight 'round his spear. "Who are you?" His words would not stop shaking. "Sallant." It took one thudding step nearer. "No need to fret." Another, heavier. "No need to fear." Another, faster. "No need to signal your hunters." Another, so, so near. "I am, as you say, so-bound."
