🪼 How did the animal body plan evolve?

This ‘fundamental’ study in Clytia sheds light on how Wnt3 coordinates both gene expression and planar cell polarity during axis formation, offering key insights into the origins of morphogenesis.

Meet Camila Sánchez!

A postbac in Riccardo Papa’s lab studying wing development in 𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒖𝒔 butterflies. Using FISH technique, she tracks where and when genes like Wnt3 are expressed—mapping the pathways that shape wing color patterns.

Planar cell polarity coordination in a cnidarian embryo provides clues to animal body axis evolution
The jellyfish embryonic body axis is globally coordinated by conserved planar cell polarity (PCP) mechanisms and oriented by localised Wnt3 in two steps, highlighting PCP’s role in animal axis evoluti...

This is cool, Andy. But it might even be a bit older. Here is an image from Muller et al. (2007), showing Wnt3 expression at the tip of the #Hydractinia male sporosac. this is the point from which they spawn. Would be interesting to look at some other genes.

How much of the variability in Parkinson's genetics is actually epistasis which is the statistical interaction between two or more genetic variants? Hint: Something interesting is present in SNCA, MAPT and WNT3. Cisterna-Garcia and colleagues tackled this in the latest article in the journal Brain.
