The problem I have with so much attention being given to the bereaved parents of kids who completed suicide on the issue of a social media ban, is that no attention is ever given to why these kids might be turning to more extreme content on social media in the first place.

Bereaved families ‘horrified’ over politicians entering social media ban debate, says Russell The father of a teenager who took her own life after viewing suicide and self-harm content online has said banning under-16s from social media would be wrong. Ian Russell, the father of Molly Russell, told BBC's Newscast that the government should enforce existing laws rather than "implementing sledgehammer techniques like bans".

30 years later, nothing had changed.
Young men bereaved by suicide are still left unsupported — and at risk themselves.
When we truly listen, they speak.
It’s time to change how we support men in grief. Watch the full podcast on youtu.be/fkGc6EM1tis

Suicide bereavement is often accompanied by profound uncertainty, self-blame, and silence — yet these experiences are rarely spoken about openly.

If you are involved in funding/commissioning/designing support that will prevent suicide and help bereaved people feel able to live good lives after unthinkable loss, I promise you that this is a huge under served demographic.

In 2026, I would love to see peer led/user led support spaces for bereaved by suicide people who also need to talk about their suicidal feelings. I don't know that these spaces exist and they are so needed, this intersection of grief and suicide is so isolating.

‼️ People bereaved by suicide are 65% more likely to take their own life ‼️

Grief after suicide often comes with guilt, shame, and stigma.

These feelings can isolate and silence people who most need support.

We must break the silence, not add to it.

✍️ I've joined cross-party colleagues in writing to Ofcom about a harmful suicide forum.

Bereaved families have shown immense courage in campaigning for the Online Safety Act. However, years later, after it's been passed, this site remains.

Maybe what we're wrestling with here is how afraid our culture is of stepping into the unknown territory of talking about suicide, as a society, we're still so hung up on contagion and getting it wrong that we'll* neglect to try to get it right.

*not shaming individuals who tried and are bereaved.
