One of the most everyday things you'll see in writers' circles is authors, full solo control, talking about their characters + even whole storylines deeply surprising them. It's commonplace for people imagining & mentally exploring stories. Add in RPG randomizers or storygame tools to encourage.

More seriously, this fits with a theory I've been muddling through on that the mainstream of what is considered OSR design is as hostile to the idea of any kind of serious simulation as storygame designers, they just phrase it a bit differently.

Yeah, this is what I think I mean when I say that the Bastionlands are starting to lean more towards storygame-like approaches. That's also where you can see that the approach or attitude is important: the sparks and improvisation still need to be presented as the fact of the matter.
