[Excerpt from Chapter Four of "Confessions from the Scene of the Crime" (by me):] Charlie called it the Curse of the Fresh Corpse. If he’d been able to share his unique observations with anyone else, he was sure they would have found it to be quite the clever turn of phrase, or at least a good title for a pulp mystery novel. He’d never shared that sort of thing with Gail. She didn’t enjoy hearing about the more morbid details of his professional life. Sometimes he wondered why she’d married a cop at all. For whatever reason, and by whatever cosmic laws that governed Charlie’s ability to talk to objects, fresh corpses were off limits. He could poke and prod all he wanted, salt them with questions and pepper them with one-liners, but the damned things never said a word. That vague social barometer which registered the pressure of a distinct personality in the objects he spoke to, even when they were silent—the same pressure that informed most people when there was someone else in the room with them—didn’t budge an inch when Charlie looked at a newly dead body. It was like the previous tenant had just packed up and left, and the new one, the one that Charlie could hear when no one else could, wasn’t allowed to move in until the place was fully renovated, decked out in Nouveau Skeleton Gothic. By the time they were nothing but bones, they didn’t have any significant memories of their time spent waltzing around in the guts and flesh of their former owners. They were just piles of bones, not the remnants of a living, breathing, belching, farting human. It was a slight glitch in his work flow, since it meant he couldn’t question a victim directly. Still, there was nothing off limits about a victim’s wardrobe.

That photo of a possum looking in a mirror inspired me to post this excerpt from my novel, 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵—early on in Chapter Seven.

Point of fact: Jenny's mirror image is, by far, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 the strangest thing in the book.

She finished up, swished some toothpaste in her mouth for a minute before gargling and spitting, and splashed her face and hair with cold water. Her hair was a mess, but that was why she kept it short and spiky—it was hard to tell what was intentional and what was a bad hair day. She exchanged looks with her mirror image and hoped she was faring slightly better than Mirror Jenny. They stuck out their tongues at each other. Jenny reached over and flicked the light switch. Movement caught her eye before the bathroom went pitch dark. Jenny immediately flicked the light back on and looked around. Nothing there. She checked the mirror. Mirror Jenny nodded at her. That was a little disconcerting; Jenny hadn’t nodded. Jenny tightened her lips and made an executive decision to ignore this particular incident until further notice. She vehemently looked anywhere else, shut the light off again, and huffed back out of the bathroom.

[Excerpt from Chapter Four of "My Electromagnetic Romance" (by me):] “So...this Berenbaum-Bean Field,” Lu tactfully changed subjects, “what is it—what does it do? The ‘reciprocating resonance’? You said you can get...fast particles to go even faster. Right?” Berenbaum waffled. “It’s not really speed. We actually measure—” “Basically, yes,” Bean cut in diplomatically. “The Berenbaum-Bean Field is sort of a...pull between particles that exist within a specific subset—like a group or...or family of particles. At extremely high energies—very high speeds, but specific ones—the particles kind of ‘encourage’ each other to keep up. One particle imparts energy to all the rest, but also receives energy from all the rest. The overall quantity of energy is conserved, of course, but the quality of the energy is altered...it takes on different properties.” Berenbaum jumped in, finally getting into the less jargonistic spirit of The Berenbaum-Bean Field for Dummies: “They exchange energy in a new way, so instead of losing momentum, they all keep each other going. All the particles in the subset keep pulling each other along to keep up their...you know, their ‘speed.’ They, like...support each other, so none of them slows down. If you speed one up, they all go with it. So if you speed all of them up, the energy—the speed, I mean, gets pretty fast, pretty quick.” Lu thought about it as they neared an intimidating door at the end of the corridor. “So all the particles in that ‘family’ kind of share their energy with each other?” “Right!” Bean nodded brightly. “Basically. And the Berenbaum-Bean Field is defined by the equations we derive from those observations. It’s sort of the ‘glue’ that keeps the family together.” “So it’s like the subatomic equivalent of ‘love’?” Lu mused cynically. Judah Berenbaum scoffed, but very quietly and unconvincingly. Greer Bean’s face flickered with a strange, distant smile. “You know,” she answered softly, “I suppose maybe it is.”
