I’m sitting here attempting to write this review and pondering where to start but the only thought that comes repeatedly to mind is, I loved this book! However, I do need to offer something more substantial so we’ll begin with the cover. I’m of the divided mind (and maybe this is appropriate, considering Jackrabbit’s duality) that it alludes to the content in the broadest of strokes, painting a child’s picture of what is, in truth, an amazing story full of adult realities (and un-realities); but also that it might just be perfectly intentional considering Jackrabbit’s persistent child-like enthusiasm and genuine innocence in his interactions with the mortals he’s trying (and sometimes forgetting he’s trying) to save. I can’t tell if it’s genius or a product of a lazy cover artist.

Just scanned this paragraph from #JackrabbitMessiah🐰 when I was looking for a different passage to promo-quote, and thought it was pretty funny that I wrote this line at least four years *before* "Stranger Things" came out. 😁
[Text excerpt with one bit HIGHLIGHTED.] The face in the window pulled away, leaving only darkness behind the reflective surface. Amity could see herself and her two companions in the reflection; they were an oddly matched trio, and their defiant fingers [Highlighted part starts:] looked like something out of a cheesy action flick pitting improbably resourceful teenagers against malevolent forces with government clearance and demonic sponsorship. [Page 173 from "Jackrabbit Messiah" (by me):] [A spraypainted, dripping little emblem of a grinning cartoon bunny sits before the chapter header.] ABOUT SIXTY PARAGRAPHS EARLIER Soft music floated through the bar, as it always did, scratching vinyl artifacts over the sound of a jazz quartet on the verge of splitting up and going their separate ways. The dim orange lighting gave the place the perpetual look of an October night; if the television were on, you might expect to see vampishly spooky advertisements for flavored ales occasionally interrupting the contrived Halloween episodes of the latest popular sitcoms. The screen was blank and vandalized with letters scratched roughly into the glass surface. It may not even have been plugged in. Matthew clenched the inside edge of the bar with rough, crooked fingers and calmly watched with his one good eye. His thinning hair, clipped to mere stubble, would have made him look like a tough guy even without the thick, muscular frame surprising on a man of his age. Two men flanked the Prince of Chicago in his booth at the back of the bar. One was a short, wiry man with a patchy bald head; his hair had been falling out for the last fifteen years, and Matthew had been dutifully sweeping it away. If Matthew recalled correctly, the guy was in marketing when he’d arrived at the bar looking for an out of the way spot to get away from a convention. The other one was the tall, sallow man with a mustache and a decidedly English chin—or rather, a decidedly English omission of any chin—the man that, Matthew knew, had some sort of connection to the old woman who had come to challenge the Prince last night. Presumably, the guy had fancied himself as some kind of hero—until the Prince defeated him. But that was long before Matthew’s time. [page number centered:] 173 [This chapter continues for seven more pages before the next one begins.] [Page 181 from "Jackrabbit Messiah" (by me):] [A spraypainted, dripping little emblem of a grinning cartoon bunny sits before the chapter header.] RIGHT WHERE WE LEFT OFF The muffled, distant warble of fire engine sirens peeked between the peaks in volume as the blaring alarms in the restaurant continued riding a decibel sine wave like a roller coaster with a sign stating “You Must Be This Loud To Ride This Ride.” The Princess’s big blue eyes smoldered even louder. “Officer,” Amity Sheridan tried, putting on her best Concerned Professional voice. “Save it!” the first cop ordered, taking a few steps closer. The other stayed near the door, covering the scene with his pistol. “Are you carrying a weapon, or anything that you might hurt someone with?” “No, I’m not,” Amity said cautiously. She tried again: “Officer, the girl...” “Just keep your hands on your head,” the cop told her, “and keep still.” Amity hesitated. “I work with the New York Police Department. That girl over there...” “Police man?” the Princess of Chicago interrupted. “Are you going to shoot that lady?” Her voice hadn’t changed a bit. It was the same finely crafted flute shattering glass with vicious abandon. There wasn’t some new sinister evil slithering demonically through her throat, no lingering traces of the old Prince with his smoky, subterranean notes like some ponderous necromancer arriving home to furiously discover his lazy apprentice beset by rebellious janitorial supplies. [Excerpt from the unnumbered Chapter called "Right Where We Left Off" in "Jackrabbit Messiah" (by me):] “There you are!” Amity cringed; she felt Maggie do the same. Standing in the doorway to the hall, Annette pointed at Maggie Calloway while straightening her disheveled outfit irritably. The firemen all shifted and stared at the perky blonde. Annette looked around the room. “What is going on here?” she demanded. “Where’s my daughter? Who are you, lady?” One of the firemen took the center of the room, holding his hands up. “Listen, we need you all to calm down and tell us what’s going on,” he commanded. “Miss,” he addressed Annette, “where’s your daughter?” “Ask her,” Annette jabbed her finger out toward Maggie. Maggie looked back with iron in her eyes. “Just what are you accusing me of, young lady?” “Accusing...?” Annette was thrown. An outright denial wasn’t something she’d expected. She looked at the firemen. “She locked me in the bathroom!” “Then how did you get out?” Maggie countered. “I crawled under the stalls!” Annette shrieked. “Do you even have a daughter?” Maggie retorted. “Hey, hey,” the fireman broke in, “let’s calm down and get this sorted out.” He looked at Annette. “Is there a child involved here?” “Of course!” Annette could barely control herself. “She’s my daughter!” He turned to Maggie and Amity. “Do you know where her daughter is?” Amity was struck dumb. She couldn’t bear the thought of what they were doing to poor Annette, no matter how good their reasons. Maggie cleared her throat and stared the fireman right in the eye. “I have absolutely no idea,” she declared. TONK. TONK. TONK. It was audible, if surreal—small, metallic pounding coming from inside the refrigerator. Every head in the room turned to look at the shiny metal door. “Okay,” the lead fireman said calmly. “Let’s everybody just stay where they are. Mikey, open up that fridge. Ladies, if you could move out of the way...?” [Continued excerpt from the unnumbered Chapter called "Right Where We Left Off" in "Jackrabbit Messiah" (by me):] Amity started to help Maggie move closer to the door where Annette still stood practically spluttering in confusion and anger; Maggie tugged the other way, though, and Amity followed her into the less crowded part of the kitchen, farther past the refrigerator and away from the doors. Maggie made a big show of limping, nearly falling over and forcing Amity to catch her before she toppled. Taking advantage of the moment, the old woman pulled herself up and put her mouth over Amity’s ear, her voice very low: “No choice. She’s out, we run. Separate...get to the crown.” Amity nodded numbly, helping Maggie recover her balance. The fireman who seemed to be in charge looked sharply at them, as another—presumably Mikey—threw the latch on the fridge door and pulled it open a crack. A small hand poked through the crack and grabbed the fireman’s wrist. He turned, fire in his eyes, and shoved the door open wider. “Here she is,” he smiled strangely. The Princess of Chicago took a step forward out of the refrigerator. Maggie whispered to Amity: “She’s out....” “Baby!” Annette squealed, rushing forward. The fireman grabbed her arm as she came close, and she stopped on the spot and turned around. “Mikey...?” the lead fireman said tentatively. Annette reached out to him; he uncertainly put out a hand, and the instant they touched, he looked darkly over at Amity and Maggie. “Men,” he said to the other firefighters, “Those two are the kidnappers. Go get ’em.” The was a murmur of confusion through the other men, some of whom advanced through the room. Amity and Maggie backed slowly away, step by step. When one of the firefighters got in range, their leader grabbed his arm—in the same sort of rickety but efficient choreography Amity remembered from Rapscallions, that fireman grabbed another, who grabbed another. “We run!” Maggie yelled.
