A while ago I got my hands on two copies of Japan Amusement Monthly, a magazine about the Japanese arcade/amusement market for a western business market. It's full of industry insights, business leader interviews and cool ads. I made a PDF each for the two issues I have..anyone want the links?
From JAM, Aug 1992 Sega, Sony Subsidiaries Tie-Up in USA O n May 21st, the US subsidiaries of Sega Enter- prises and Sony, Inc. announced an agreement in which new game software will be produced using multi-media technology. According to the new con- tract, California-based Sega of America and New York's Sony USA will join forces in the home game market. Under the agreement, Sony Electronic Publishing, one of Sony USA's R&D companies, will develop and market new software for Sega's Genesis and Game Gear home computer game hardware. The new game programs should be ready for the US home game market by November, in time for the Christmas sales rush. Games for the Sega CD game unit will also be developed in cooperation with Sony Imagesoft, a sub- sidiary of Sony Electronic Publishing. According to the May 20th issue of the Wall Street Journal, both Sega and Sony are developing technolo- gy that features live actors, stereo sound and movielike storylines." Sega is already developing elaborate cinematic-style versions of for its video games. One such game is Night Trap, featuring a sto- ryline that centers on a vampire who "invades the homes of nubile women" I' at night. Night Trap features real movie sets, costumes and has multiple endings. Sometime next year, Sony will start to market its own new CD game console, the Play Station. Although the Play Station can operate with both CDs and 16-bit software cartridges, it is not clear as of yet whether or not Sony's unit will be compatible with Sega's software. Sega plans to introduce its CD game unit to the American market sometime in the latter half of Octo- ber. So the definition of “application” further down includes “website”. Although this isn’t the wording a technical expert would use, they do, in a sense, “distribute” the “website”.
