A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.

But then, one day in late January, she was told she had to stop her work, immediately. There wasn’t a chance to explain to her patients what was happening, to try to connect them with other providers, or to say goodbye.

From a source: “Just had a co-presenter for a buildings research conference bow out. She’s a dual citizen and the FBI came knocking to ask her about her involvement in coauthoring chunks of the Paris Agreement.

Climate science is being literally (and I mean literally) criminalized.”

NEW today from @miamiherald.com: more men sent to El Salvador on Saturday have been identified by their families, including a 27-year-old who entered legally at a port of entry in 2023 through the CBP One app and a 29-year-old father of a baby born here last year. Neither have any criminal record.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

NIH saved my life. I had melanoma that went to my lymph nodes. In the early 2000's - after doing a year of Interferon - I was able to get an experimental vaccine @NIH that literally saved my life. 1 injection every 3 weeks for a year. Originally had 14% survival rate - now still cancer free. 🙏🏻

Quinoa is grown all over now but 20 years ago it was almost unknown. USAID, working with countries in the Andean region, helped develop and popularize the nutritious grain, thereby raising living standards and reducing food insecurity. It’s just one example of what we’ve lost.

880 employees were cut across NOAA, about 7 percent of the workforce, including earth scientists, meteorologists, computer modelers, and space weather forecasters. It’s already causing some functions — like weather balloon launches that provide raw data for weather models — to shut down.
Who needs weather reports anyway?
How layoffs at NOAA reveal a flaw in the government’s hiring system, briefly explained.

18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.

“It would have a similar effect to the closing of a steel mill,” said @vscooper.micropopbio.org , a prof of microbiology at the Univ of PBG. “This is not a steel town anymore; it’s a biomedical research town, and those cuts would affect Pittsburgh perhaps more than any other city in the country.”
