They never really replaced the hulls. Taiho (itself a “replacement“ and Shokaku are gone by the time Katsuragi (the 3rd and last Unryu finishes) and Leyte Gulf is done 2 weeks after that.

I did get lucky with setting CAP fairly far out and bouncing Shokaku and Zuikaku's strikers on takeoff (what air defense doing?). Wildcat AI fumbled the bag though.

I lost a flattop (Lexington), in exchange for sinking Zuikaku and wrecking Shokaku.

Yorktown was uh, fairly banged up.

Not yet brave enough to try Of Cranes, Patriots... and Friends, dealing with Shokaku, Zuikaku and Kaga simultaneously is going to be hard. I think I'll be lucky if I can scrape out a Tactical Defeat and Strategic Victory.

Once you've managed to smash both Shokaku and Zuikaku's flight decks and wiped out their initial strikes by scrambling 30+ fighters, you have all these fighters lying around just cluttering up the flight deck and hangar.

never had a chance. Nor did Yamato and Mushashi later in the war.

Subs took down the carriers Courageous, Ark Royal, Yorktown, Wasp, Liscombe Bay, Taiho, Shokaku, and Shinano, plus the battleship Barham. I’m going from memory so might have forgotten a few.

Id love to see Shokaku or Zuikaku more than just about any other wrecks.

84 years ago today. Japan’s largest strike force of the entire war: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. I think I should add it to Midway 1981 as a what-if scenario. What if the Enterprise, Lexington, and Saratoga were in the area? What if the old battleships weren’t sunk at anchor?

To be precise, Battleship No. 1 is a mistranslation.No. 1 is Yamato, No. 2 is Musashi, but No. 3 and No. 4 are the aircraft carriers Shōkaku and Zuikaku, No. 5 is the seaplane tender Nisshin, and No. 6 is the minelayer Tsugaru.

More Task Force Admiral testing, and Shokaku receives some real nasty punishment. Total of roughly 12 1000lb bombs and 2 torpedoes over about 1 hour.

Total strike AC total - 42 Dauntless & 30 Devastators

Day three, which I have coined.

"Disappointment on Southern Winds"

Such potential & promise. But Shokaku ends up vanishing like a ghost.

Spent the weekend playing @taskforceadmiral.bsky.social TFA.
Still need to complete the run this coming weekend.

But, mistakes, air-ops muddles, and a crane that refuses to sink :) All happened.
