I think institutions of at least moderate selectivity have a benefit of gunner students that will push back against particularly bad lecturers. Community college level has more variability in lecturer quality (at both ends).

It's true that this can turn into a system of classist elite replication, and we should do what we can to actively fight against that. But ending selectivity entirely doesn't do that.
