While Funagata's (舟形) origins are unclear, the boat design was possibly created to mimic the 'Gusei-no-fune' (弘誓の船 lit. 'Boat of Buddha's Great Vow'). These small straw boats were traditionally woven for new spirits to leave on at the time of the equinox services (涅槃の彼岸 'Higan-e').

Funagata floats above the cityscape on August 16th, a boat sailing away with the spirits of the dead. The small temple of Saiho-ji is caretaker of the Funagata Gozan-no-Okuribi. It is from here fire is carried up the mountain to light the bonfires. Incense offerings. Funagata shortly after being lit. Here is is possible to make out the individual bonfires (like a dot to dot drawing).

& if you'll indulge me in just one recommendation, Saihō-ji is an absolutely breathtaking moss garden in Kyoto.

You can only visit by sending a hand-written letter requesting a booking, which seems like a hassle, but ultimately helps keep it a little sacred. 10/10.

Funagata (舟形) is the 3rd of the Gozan-no-Okuribi. The ringing of the temple bell at Saihō-ji (西方寺) signals the bonfire to be lit at 8:15pm.

As the name suggests, the bonfires form the shape of a huge boat on the side of Mt Myōken (妙見山 aka Nishigamoyama 西賀茂山).

Crediting Amida Nyorai (阿弥陀仏) with his protection during the storm, in thanks Ennin created a ship out of lanterns on the mountain above Saihō-ji (西方寺) to carry and guide the souls of the dead safely into Amida's care (in the Western Paradise 極楽浄土 'Gokuraku Jōdo').

Friends, I am two full days behind on #Kyoto posting, but let me tell you: #Saiho-ji (in this video) is absolutely worth the prebooking process and fee, and this glorious city still has places of beauty and calm so stunning that it’s like being drunk on delight.

Over 120 species of moss grow like an unbroken carpet of green across much of Saihō-ji's garden.

In order to protect this mossy paradise, since 1977 guests need to apply for admission. Before entering the garden, visitors first hand copy a sutra excerpt (写経 'shakyō').

Hillocks of moss, like a landscape in miniature. Saihō-ji's main hall was rebuilt in 1969 under the supervision of Kyōto University Professor Murata Jirō (京都大学名誉教授村田治郎). The building was named 'Sairai-dō' (西来堂 the 'Coming from the West Hall') by Musō Kokushi, who restored the temple in the 14thC. The name refers to the phrase 'soshi seirai-i' (祖師西来意), meaning 'Bodhidharma (the monk) that brought Zen to China, came from the west (India)'. Although it looks very serene nowadays, the Saihoji River (which passes by the temple) is responsible for creating the famous moss garden. In the past it would regularly flood, inadvertently destroying the original precincts, in their place allowing a mossy wonderland to grow. Over 120 different species of moss grow in the grounds of Saiho-ji.

If you've never looked into it, Saihō-ji is probably the most difficult temple to visit that you are actually allowed to visit, and you are going to have to do some Zen to walk in the moss garden

A history of Saihō-ji, written in 1400, suggests that the temple stands on the site of a cottage (enshrining Amida) built by Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子 574-622).

Shōtoku also had a hand in the creation of Kōryū-ji (広隆寺), Rokkaku-dō (六角堂) and Hōkan-ji (法観寺/Yasaka Pagoda).

Shōnan-tei (湘南亭) teahouse is the oldest of Saiho-ji's buildings. Built by Sen-no-Shōan during the Momoyama Period (1568-1600), it is said that Sen-no-Rikyū came here to still his heart and mind after being ordered to commit ritual suicide by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Saihō-ji was originally made as a prince's retreat in the 700's (Nara period). It fell into disrepair which led to it's redesign in 1339 with a dry zen garden where the "islands" were "carpeted with white sand".

Legend has it that Funagata was created by Ennin (圓仁 793- 864), 3rd Abbot of Enryaku-ji (延暦寺) and founder of Saihō-ji (西方寺), grateful to survive a storm on his return from China in 847.

Saihō-ji sits at the foot of the mountain and is and deeply connected to the Okuribi.
