Owl feathers contain porphyrins, which fluoresce pink under ultraviolet light. Recently grown feathers fluoresce, while older feathers don’t, as porphyrins fade with age. First-year (1 flight feather generation) and second-year (2 generations) Northern Saw-whet Owls are pictured. 🇨🇦🧪🌎 #birdringing

Happy Halloween! Here's a fun fact about owls for spooky season. Owls fluoresce pink under UV light. This is due to pigments called porphyrins, and helps researchers age owls. There are more pigments on new feathers, so younger owls glow more uniformly bright pink.

Plant matter concentrates V in anoxic sediments, and V porphyrins are shaped like chlorophyll, but Mannardite itself is inorganic. Nature is perfect chemical refinery. I don’t know about neutrality. Crude oil, shale, and V are so integral to each other, they seem hard to separate.

It’s the porphyrin chemistry. Plant porphyrins have a role concentrating the V, but #Mannardite is an inorganic mineral. Iron porphyrins are hemoglobin. Mg = chlorophyll. Ni =Abelsonite. Porphs have diverse optical properties and biochem functions.

I was pretty excited - not gonna lie - to learn about V porphyrins and relationships between V and crude oil, especially how V porphyrins are incorporated into keragens abiotically. What?!? But what did the mineralization process look like during pre-Cambrian times, before we had organic matter?
September 16, 2025 at 4:19 AM
Why is V so concentrated in crude oil and oil shales?

Anoxic waters, H2S reduction, formation of porphyrin complexes, precipitation, clay adsorption, shale deposition, mineralization.

Tiny, V-rich #Mannardite punches above its weight.
