A Black Oystercatcher, looking for a spot to sit a clam to jab it open. On rocks, with weed and barnacles on some. A Pied-billed Grebe, and its reflection on calm water - a few drops of water on its back too. A Green Heron, standing on a drainage pipe as the water from high tide and rain flow back into the bay. Head on view of a Least Sandpiper, standing on a green seaweed covered rock and looking right at me. Out of focus water behind.

Newark's Lakeshore Park. Lots of feathered wildlife to be seen in addition to the usual (geese, mallards, egrets, cormorants and coots). I also saw some shovelers, a ruddy duck and a pied-billed grebe. See alt text for more info!
Great blue heron (Area herodias). From a distance, I thought it might be a Sandhill crane, which would be a rarity, since they tend not to venture west of the Central Valley. That Great Blue Heron again. She knows she's a star! Muscovy duck. I thought he was gone, but it looks like he just shows up for the winter. I had no idea they're migratory. They're not actually native to California, so I have no idea what's going on here. White pelicans. I thought this lake was too small for the likes of them, but there were a lot of them!

Miroir, mon beau miroir…
Sur une cheminée en briques rouges est posé un miroir en demi-lune. Dans la cheminée, un cadre provenant des Mots à l’Affiche reprenant le texte « tu mérites un amour » de Frida Kahlo. Diverses choses sont posées sur le rebord de la cheminée. Une lampe à pétrole, une bougie électrique et une sculpture de héron (petit patapon) Dans le reflet du miroir, on peut y voir un lego du jeu Horizon posé sur une étagère. Ah, et aussi mes fesses portant une culotte noire en dentelle. La même que "transparence" d’ailleurs. Mes cheveux frôlent le haut de ma culotte. Le tout est éclairé par un fort rayon du soleil. Au final, la photo n’a aucune compo particulière, mais j’aime bien l’ambiance qui s’en dégage. J’ai récupéré un miroir en pied, j’aurai pu l’inaugurer pour aujourd’hui, mais flemme. Faudra que j’y pense quand même pour d’autres photos.

A couple of Avocets ’aving a set-to (at @rspb.bsky.social Middleton Lakes reserve in May) for #BirdOfTheDay. Such scuffles between these usually graceful wading #birds were brief, uncommon – and nowhere near as dramatic as the Heron battle captured by Rob!

The bird on the left, facing towards the left side of the picture, is well down in the water, with the lower part of his or her body not visible. The bird on the right, facing towards us with wings raised, is mostly out of the water. The camera has captured water splashes around the birds as evidence of the brief tussle that has just taken place. The Avocet is a wading bird, with a long, slim, black bill that has an upturned tip, a medium-length neck, and long, pale-blue legs. The plumage is mostly white, but the top half of the head is black, and there are black markings on the wings too.

On a humid, dank, dawn at Nantong Yangkou, quick bit of birding before flight home from Shanghai included a Common Hoopoe & on a little wetland, big roost of Black-crowned Night Heron, while a Pied Kingfisher hunted for brek & Black Drongo perched above the tidal flats. #BirdsSeenIn2025 #China 1/2

I don’t give the little Pied-billed Grebes that live in my pond enough attention. Pied-Billed Grebes tend to be independent but I usually see a pair in my pond and another. Hank was also fishing, as usual, and needed a bit of a trim. Not the best quality picture but the extra feather is fun. #heron

The island is primarily agricultural and there were lots of waterbirds, including grey heron and sacred ibis, which adds two more to my ancient Egyptian carving list.
Also got a closer pic of a pied kingfisher and saw a couple white-throated kingfishers (who have beautiful blue wings).
