This is what happened when AI acted as both author and reviewer - a study found AI peer-reviewers accepted fake AI-generated papers 4 out of 5 times. We need #PeerReview to be better, and human oversight is more vital than ever!

True story:
Nature comms Editor when asking for #PeerReview: Please return review within 10-14 days.
Nature Comms editor when asked about r2 paper in review for 70(!) days: sorry, we’ll return to you in a week or so.
Then they'll charge you $6.8K to publish YOUR work.
System is broken.

Should #PeerReview in STEM be paid work? I'd think so. I read this blog with fair reasoning. #AcademicSky #Science #EduSky

I also found a journal article which tried this exact thing and found benefits: doi.org/10.1257/jep....

Here’s another example how scientific publishing is broken.
Reviewers often asked to comment on what they do NOT know.
For most Journals, #PeerReview is not a means of ensuring quality of content published - it is a signal of exclusivity.
And we all donate our time willfully.

I receive more and more #PeerReview requests where the subject is in my area but the statistical methods are much more complicated than I am comfortable assessing

#MedSky #PulmSky folks, what do you do in this case: accept or decline?
How do you make sure you don't miss something wrong?
