Day 3: Spend the morning enjoying the lovely palaces and gardens at the Royal Alcázar (book in advance). Then head across the river into Triana – home to sailors, pottery workers, bullfighters and flamenco. Grab some lunch at the Mercado before exploring further.

In ancient Rome you would stick sculptures in your garden. Dinosaurs, not so much. This was the whackiest botanical garden I’ve ever seen. 🌱 One of the few gardens remaining from the massive palaces shelled and destroyed to prevent the French from taking them, in the dual to reunify Italy.

This is a beautiful addition, not a hesitation at all. Walled gardens feel perfectly at home within Palaces and Gardens—they’re intimate, intentional spaces that hold so much history and quiet drama. Wakehurst’s is a wonderful example too:

That there be a regular option for gardens. We don’t have palaces in Australia, although some buildings have aspired… (This is the Largs Bay Hotel in South Australia. I took the photo today) ☺️

I loved visiting the Alhambra, a palace and fortress located in Granada, Spain. One of the best-preserved palaces of the Islamic world. Geometric patterns, vegetal motifs, and inscriptions were the main types of decorations. Additionally, "stalactite"-like sculpting was used for ceilings.

👑 The Residenzstädte (Residence Cities) 👑
These were the seats of power for monarchs and noblemen. Think of Potsdam and Aachen - places built to impress with grand palaces, manicured gardens, and royal theatres.
