Charles III post box souvenir found by me while mudlarking yesterday under some old revetments. The legacy of Kings - to be remembered as a fridge magnet.

Because I have a million things to do today, I’m currently faffing about decorating my mudlarking finds cabinet with drunken robins, sparkly baubles & berries. Every new year I have a bit of a sort out of artefacts, some ‘doubles’ might even get returned to the river. Curation is never ending 1/

One of this week’s Thames Foreshore mudlarking finds, this is a whirligig, or child’s spinning toy. Made of lead and popular from the Victorian era onwards, these gave various instructions to the players. The word ‘whirligig’ has its origins in the Middle English ‘whirlegigg’ meaning whirling top.

Reminds me of #FindsFriday artefact now in London Museum's mudlarking exhibition:
1550-1650 elephant ivory pocket sundial of a ship's captain; possibly made in Germany, also had compass in recess.
Found in same area of Thames foreshore in 2 parts, by 2 different mudlarks, 8 years apart.

Spot the find. An easy one. Mudlarking is about ‘getting your eye in’, i.e. looking for perfect shapes & colours of artefacts that don’t appear naturally among the stones, gravel, mud, sand and rubble of the Thames Foreshore. Scanning as I walk, a pop of green grabs my attention. A child’s marble.

Arrived too early for a work appointment and the tide was low so had my first taste of Thames mudlarking. All it gave me were a quarter of a plate, a shoe sole, a wooden chair leg, and muddy boots (mine) - and I loved it!

a loose approximation of a painting. Still Life with a Stoneware Jug, Berkemeyer, and Smoking Utensils, 1640, Pieter Claesz (Dutch, about 1597–1661) echoed in #mudlarking finds from the Thames

Awesome! I've booked my ticket finally, I aim to be there early-ish but I may hop out to fly up to the Museum of London Docklands to see their Mudlarking exhibition around lunch (I think it'll be the only chance I get to do so) and then be back at Dragonmeet for the afternoon.

Yes, this is why mudlarking is heavily regulated, in order that important artefacts are reported and recorded.

I went to the Museum of London Docklands' mudlarking exhibition on Saturday, and it was an absolute delight. So many fascinating things, including the incredible Battersea Shield - familiar from every British primary school history book - and it is utterly breathtaking.

On 5th Nov in Britain we remember the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up Parliament & assassinate King James I. Some years ago while mudlarking I found a James I copper alloy coin weight for a half crown of the 2nd coinage (1612-1619) which might never have happened if Fawkes & Co had succeeded.

Really enjoyed the mudlarking exhibition at London Museum Docklands (Secrets of the Thames).
(Images below from a book I bought whilst there).
The randomness of the finds through so many ages really appeals to me. Almost glad I don't live in London as I'm sure I could be tempted to give it a go...

Lots of comments about the artefact on our front cover this issue - it's an eel spear!

The spear is currently on display in the Mudlarking exhibition at London Museum Docklands until 1 March 2026.
