The issue with these guys I think is twofold:
1. Windfarms couldn't make upland moor any more artificial than it already is. Naturally, it's forest.
2. If we don't flip to renewables the moorland will be destroyed anyway.
So what am I missing?

Morning walk today as I’m getting my hair cut at lunch (I will do some work today!) Proof that the sun does shine in Yorkshire sometimes.

Stunning @knightshayesNT which is a key setting for Josephine’s gothic, moorland story! Quiet, bookish Jo is no less a Fairfax when she needs to be & infamous murder suspect Lord Huntingly is just about to discover the same. The Proposition of the Season is on offer thru Feb🪶✨

The landscape of the Moon of Gomrath no longer exists - they built a resevoir across the scene of the moorland chase.

so too the bit of formerly rural Bucks where the opening sequence of The Dark is Rising takes place - now M4, Jubilee river and Sainsburys

The Cattle Grid sign warns of a metal grid over a pit designed to contain livestock. Common in rural or moorland areas and National Parks. On approach, slow down to avoid vehicle damage. Be alert for animals nearby and take care in the wet as the metal bars can be slippery.

I try to love it (love me some moorland) but it always boils down to terrible people being terrible to one another. Maybe it’s time for a reread with another decade or so of life under my belt….

Night. Old man of Storr (very distant) before snow closed in. Luckily back home despite Calmac.

It seems like the winter feeding of game birds by our keepers is helping some unexpected little friends. These pretty red squirrels were caught on camera taking advantage of the feeding station in this mornings snow.

It's an interesting place. It was farmed and inhabited during the Bronze age. Now it's a mix of marsh, moorland, and birch woods.

Deer? I saw quite a few this weekend, up on the moorland trails.

A walk in the beautiful moorland that inspired Wuthering Heights, then a well-earned pint of Landlord, there's nothing quite like it.

Step out from The Fleece on Haworth’s historic cobbled Main Street and head into the wild moorland.

Top Withens farmhouse near Haworth in Yorkshire. It is believed to have inspired Emily Brontë when writing Wuthering Heights. I had a pee here about 18 years ago. I don’t generally believe in curses but things haven’t been great for me since.

☺️

Locally the burning has been associated w destruction of peat bogs n the % influence that has on flooding in the valley calculated. As Mac was saying the natural state would be woodland. It's a hard equation to balance, moorland is the character of W. Yorks but grouse moors have consequences

🤔

Did you ever try to walk through unmanaged heather . . .

Might be hard to find some though, zoom in on any piece of moorland in the north of England on google maps an you'll probably see the burning patterns.

I know the burning isn't without problems but moorland is a managed environment.

🤔

I think I was using naturally in the sense of it being in the nature of moorland to lack trees rather than it's nature being the product of a natural mechanism, although I might argue it the other way as well and remove the discontinuity between man and nature.
February 15, 2026 at 7:00 PM
Well, not naturally.
Much moorland was forested after the last ice age but then cleared by by Neolithic farmers with fire and grazing.
This caused long-term changes that prevented full forest regeneration.
So, ironically, it looks wild because it is a managed landscape.

...but there's no argument to retain grouse moorland. No ecological on.
February 15, 2026 at 6:15 PM
🤔

It's a piece of moorland so naturally lacks trees . . .

Bleak and windswept are just adjectives used by writers to hype the place up and attract tourists . . .
