#Ka’u
Great photo!! The hubby and I love Ka’ū coffee from Hawaii. ☕️

The Costa Rican reserve has a light cocoa and honey thing going on, goes really well with sweet Ka'u notes. And yes, grateful every day I live next door to the Big Island and its coffee plantations. Although we grow some good beans right here on Maui as well. :)

Ka'u is one of my favorites - good to know it's blend-friendly too!

Usually grind 50g of beans for morning pot, only had 38g of Costa Rican beans left so the rest was filled in with Ka'u....this is a VERY successful blend of flavors. #MorningCoffee

Recently found out a relative of a friend is a Ka'u GROWER, have an 8oz bag of beans that's next in the press.

Oh, to have Ka'u beans on the regular from a roadside stall.

Every trip to Hawaii is, technically, industry research.
January 29, 2026 at 11:54 PM
Oh, they do! I get my Ka'u Estate from them! By "Maui coffees" I thought you meant "coffee grown on Maui" of which there is quite a bit now. :)
January 29, 2026 at 11:14 PM
Yes, some good coffee comes out of this island now....although my coffee heart belongs to the Big Island and Ka'u...

I got messed up by two things:
Usually you need to grind coarse for a French press
Ka'u beans are like immensely dense compared to ordinary beans so measuring by volume works...poorly. I have a scale on the way LOL
That said, this Barzata Virtuoso + grinder worth every penny. Perfect grind.

Taking my joys where I find them these days. I must say, having a coffee press that keeps coffee hot and isolates the grounds after pressing is an unexpectedly delightful luxury. I am now an ESPRO evangelist. :) (Sips Ka'u and sighs happily)
It took a few days of experimentation (I have neither a coffee scale nor a temp-control kettle) but got the first REALLY good cup of coffee out of this setup this morning. Nearly there. If you have a grinder with exact control over grind size, you need the RIGHT grind size, who knew?
Gourmet grinder and French press achievement unlocked. This is my Baratza Virtuoso+ grinder and ESPRO P7 press. Two quality items, worth the $$. I'm pleased, feel I got exactly what I paid for, a rarity nowadays. : ) ☕

Yes! I swear on whatever you consider holy, when I saw the smoke going up at that about 30-degree angle, I knew exactly where they filmed that in the Ka'u District on the Island of Hawaiʻi - just south of where the lava tube emptied out into the ocean. A magnificently useless skill!

Do you mean Kona coffee? It’s overrated… really. Plus, it’s not strong enough for me. I like my coffee really strong, a dark roast. I drink it iced, w /cream. How do you drink your coffee?
Lion coffee is pretty good, too. The coffee from the Ka’u area of the island is better than Kona coffee, btw.🤙
