It had been a disappointing day. Two hours or more, and no birds other than the common ones. Ahead of me, I heard noises. And there, maybe 10 feet away, was this juvenile red-tailed hawk. A very stressed squirrel trembled on a tree trunk a bit further away. Evidently, the hawk had tried to grab the squirrel and missed. It took little notice of me, although, as you can see, it gave me an occasional look. An adult hawk of any species would never let a human get this close. I fired away for nearly half an hour, even when the hawk flew off to another tree. I was able to follow it. It turned out to be a great day.

There was another small fire on the hill when I took this shot -- so the air smelled like wood smoke. I guess it is reassuring that the birds have not given up on the park as an urban respite for wildlife.
At low tide, the tidal flats of Muscota marsh provide camouflage for the otherwise showy Great Blue Heron carefully walking through.

Whew! A semi-secret path down the side of a hill in Inwood Hill Park, lined with an old stone wall. Visible through the trees in the distance is a blue apartment tower which is actually in Marble Hill on the north (far) side of Spuyten Duyvil Creek. A rare chipmunk sighting in Inwood Hill Park.
