Tatematsu et al. show that, under caloric restriction, hepatic ILC1 cells preferentially survive by adopting an mTORC1-dependent quiescent state with enhanced glucose uptake and oxidative phosphorylation. This adaptation provides protection against MCMV infection during undernutrition.
