That looks very cool. Perhaps if I were younger I would throw off the shackles
of professional hydrogeology and do a masters on a topic such as this.

As an aside, one of Canada’s premier hydrogeology schools is located in Waterloo (their grads will be sure to tell it is the best school). So, if they have groundwater issues in the region, it’s almost unconscionable to have let it get so bad under their own noses.
Hugh Simpson, a former Region of Waterloo hydrogeologist, said the current water problem has been building for years — and has been worsened by the Ford government weakening long-term planning rules.

“That took away the ability to say ‘no,’” he said.
Ford's permit approvals have driven Waterloo to its water-taking limit
The Ford government approved more than 100 permits in the past five years, allowing industry to take water for industrial and commercial use in Waterloo Region, despite the province’s own data showing...

Fortran woulda still been useful had you done some hydrogeology or something :)

It's called MODFLOW in the US but many call it MUDFLOW

(the fortran has been updated, there's lowercase now)

Hydrology = The journey of water on and above the surface.
Hydrogeology = The hidden world of groundwater.
Hydrography = The mapping of water bodies for navigation and exploration.
Hydraulics = Engineering the flow of water in systems.

💧 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆

A branch of geology focused on groundwater: the hidden water stored in soil and rock fractures. It explores how groundwater moves, its quality, and the geological structures that store and transport it.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 and 𝘩𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘴? These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but each one plays a unique role in how we understand and manage water.

2/3 If you're transitioning fields, like moving from hydrogeology to geochronology, highlight transferable skills and relevant experiences that resonate with the new role. This not only shows your versatility but also your genuine interest in the position.

*splitting this out as it's irrelevant to the thread*

"If you are a hydrogeologist but want to apply for a postdoc in geochronology, don't use the same CV and cover letter as for a hydrogeology posting."

Do people actually accomplish transitions like that?
January 5, 2026 at 3:36 PM
1. Apply to whatever position interests you, but tailor the application to the posting. If you are a hydrogeologist but want to apply for a postdoc in geochronology, don't use the same CV and cover letter as for a hydrogeology posting.

I have been fascinated by the Lake Peigneur disaster since stumbling across it teaching hydrogeology many years ago.
Here's a short, but good video to whet your appetite for the book: youtu.be/p_iZr2-Coqc?...

Hydrogeology is a terrifyingly complex subject. I tried kriging for an analysis of groundwater, and a geologist I talked to about it laughed at the attempt.

It is! In my 1st job, I had the watershed hydrogeology lab, as I was the hydrogeologist. In my 2nd job, I was the surface water person, so I had a watershed hydrology lab. Now I've got a fancy title that includes "watershed science and planning" so I'll just lay claim to the word without modifiers.

Eurokarst 2026

This is an international meeting on the hydrogeology of karstified Rocks - think caves, limestone and chalk and their water resources.

Which is held in Europe. Hence the title.

The abstract deadline is now open, and closes 15th January. Pass the word!
