IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS AND SET UP HOMEBRIDGE

Another “the controller doesn’t work without internet” design. In this case, there’s a HomeBridge plugin for Apple HomeKit. Not sure that will return functionality, but at least the community is looking at it.

4. No Matter or Zigbee support, only Google Home. That said, they DO offer first party Home Assistant support, and there are homebridge plugins for reolink as well.

5. Wow is there a lot of packaging. I created a mountain of cardboard and plastic in the process of opening all this stuff. They […]

Google decided to “retire” it because of reasons. I’ve rigged everything else up through Homebridge including some other EOL devices. But no local-only support for this device 😤

I did once, in an effort to get my Rointe electric radiators to work in HomeKit but it just didn’t want to play. Eventually someone made a HomeBridge plugin which worked perfectly.
I could Controller for HomeKit gave me all the tweaks I needed for my automations.

A single $45 electronic device powers
- a homebridge server (integrates incompatible devices with Apple HomeKit)
- a network-wide ad/malware/tracking blocker (pi-hole)
- an extra network hard drive for file backups
- probably more stuff if I wanted it to

It’s replacing my 2017. The specs don’t really bug me as I use external storage.

My M1 mini runs the home theater, my HomeBridge setup (non HomeKit devices in Home), and, barely hiccups if I ask it to play 5 movies at a time.

My M1 iPad Pro is basically a laptop, but not quite.

For MQTT, I installed the add-on and then was prompted to reauth which worked perfectly. So no issues there.

For Homebridge, I actually replaced it with a Starling Home Hub I’ve had for a while. I was using it for Nest devices; it supports local video streams and more entities like the Nest […]

I did the migration today during my lunch. It’s true, it was practically seamless and everything is now back to how it was (or better!). The only things that weren’t 100% automagic were containers I was running on the same machine: an MQTT server and Homebridge for some devices that were […]

Trying to set up something apparently a bit complex in Apple Home. So far I have Zigbee hardware, Docker on a Raspberry Pi, an MQTT broker, HomeBridge, and now I’m reading about the limitations of stateless switches and HomeBridge virtual devices. All of this for [checks notes] a light switch.

seconding, also homebridge is a slightly more user friendly jumping off point if home assistant’s learning curve is too high (both are for connecting stuff that isn’t homekit compatible)
September 28, 2025 at 12:27 AM
Me over here cussing at HomeBridge because the module for one brand of camera I have won’t load.

HomeBridge acts like a bridge to bring non-Apple home (or non-Matter) devices into Home. I have a mini running as my main hub for home automation.

I build a homebridge plugin so I could control my NextDNS settings via Siri: www.jasontokoph.com/hey-siri-blo...

I’m also currently exposing this server to the Internet so I can access it remotely (and I’d previously thought about hosting my website from it), but I pay for Home Assistant Cloud through Nabu Casa and am happy to use tailscale for anything else.

I’m also currently running Homebridge (I think […]
