Even into md-January, the Goldfinches still come to the Teasel heads.
Is it time to tidy-up the garden now, Greenfingers?
Not yet - not if there's a full moon in the month.

This can mean just setting it in a random spot (like this), or adding it to a brush pile, or using it as material for a dead hedge. If we get to construct our dead hedge, that’s what we’ll end up doing, so we also separate these to avoid crushing them.

What we’d really like to do, & hope to start on this winter, is to incorporate a dead hedge into our landscape.

…you need snakes!

We’ve never found mice in our brush piles, but we’ve found small snakes nearby, garters & ringnecks, & birds use them too.

We were under observation when we arrived home. Today’s photo is some (non)native wildlife enjoying the comforts of our brush pile.

We like to keep brush piles both because amazing soil forms underneath them after a few years…

😍 35- 40 years ago I did the ‘Extra Tenner scheme*’ at Birmingham UWG & helped re-write & edit their #GardeningForWildlife book.
I still love the phrase ‘Gardening for Wildlife.’ It’s *REALLY* important.

It was actually ’Employment Training Scheme’

Maybe it’s only because I know it’s there that I imagine you can see its deep red - or purple - or red - if you look closely. (But I don’t think so.)

We’ve had black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) popping up here and there for years, but the blackberry only showed up in the last year or two.

(Some of it kept grabbing at my sweater while I took this photo.)

I like how witches’ butter fungus (Tremella mesenterica) always brightens up a winter woodland floor, shining up from the leaf litter. This was found growing on a fallen branch in the back garden today. Green woodpecker heard calling too, quite a scarce species in north Wales.

December garden beauties. Iceberg Rose, still flowering after all these months, what an incredible plant. A stunning carpet of Acer leaves. Tiny pink and white Cyclamen popping up all over the place. Purple Vinca creeping around the border. #GardeningForWildlife #pesticidefreegardening

Create it and nature will use it. A large pile of leaves lifted off the path and placed in the border next to a tree. By day, a place for Squirrels to stash nuts and birds to find grubs. By night, a place for mammals both tiny and large to forage and rest. #GardeningForWildlife #FoxOfTheDay

Reusing/redirecting materials that otherwise require burning or landfill space and/or demand resource use for disposal is one of many benefits of a #deadhedge. For me, they’re restful to my eyes as well. We hope to incorporate one into our little landscape somehow.

#gardeningforwildlife
Added another side to our dead hedge over the Summer and Autumn. This would have been bonfired, so it's good for our environment and wildlife to have turned it into a hedge. Looks good too. 🌱

Fortunately, because I was raking gently - the recommended method to #LeaveTheLeaves if impractical to leave them exactly where they fell - the little fellow was unharmed & I was able to move it to a safer leaf pile, into which it burrowed shortly after. (3/4ish)

The garden's looking very Autumnal at the moment, with colourful leaves and fallen apples. It's a bumper year for apples so, as some are quite small, they're being left for the wildlife 🍂🍃🍏Photo by my husband 📷 #wildgarden #organicgarden #homegrownapples #gardeningforwildlife #lefttoitsowndevices
