Irish is the English word for it, but Gaeilge/Gaelic/Gaoluinn/Gaolainn are all valid as Gaeilge. the subject was called Irish here too, because the subject names were in English, same as French was called French and not Français etc.

It is an option! Not an Americanism, there are lots of different versions depending on dialect, like down here it's Gaolainn/Gaoluinn, others use Gaeilge, Gaelic would be heard more up North - not exclusively, but it's a valid use.

We've already addressed the Ulster usage quite extensively within our post as well as highlighting its usage in the map from the Linguistic Atlas and Survey of Irish Dialects.

We have no issue people calling the language Gaeilge, Gaelic, Gaeilic, Gaelainn, Gaoluinn srl. We welcome dialectal usage.
