More #folktaleweek goodness. “They were able to get into the castle with key their father gave them but it was clear the kingdom was struck by a blight…or something else”.

The boy found the hare in a meadow among crops killed by the blight. He asked the hare, "How do I break this terrible curse on the land?" The hare replied, "I haven't a clue, but you might ask the old bullfrog in the swamp." #Folktaleweek (Part 3/7) #Folktaleweekblight #kidlitart

The #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt word for today is "Blight".

I felt that was hard for me (personally) to make pretty... So I leaned into straddling the gutter as a framing mechanism for text.

I also made a chapter heading spot illustration.

Rosie approached the squirrel. The squirrel spoke. "Only shall you continue on your quest, if you answer my riddle best. What has lots of bark, but no bite?"
Rosie thought long & hard about this before giving her answer. "A tree." @folktaleweek.bsky.social #folktaleweekblight #folktaleweek2024

Folktale Week - Blight

Today’s drawing isn’t based on a particular Welsh tale but just on witches on general and how they were considered a ‘blight’ on communities.

BLIGHT #folktaleweekblight

I’ve wanted to try the pencil sketch + digital color for a long while! I’d be super psyched to do a darker picture book or middle grade project in the this style.

When I have a bit more time, I'd love to try this comp in ink + watercolor!

The 3rd #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt is #FolktaleWeekBlight so I carved & printed a Lino block print of an Itsumade. A supernatural creature from Japanese folklore called a kaichō, or strange or eerie bird, the Itsumade has a human face with sharp beak-like mouth, fearsome claws with talons as sharp 🧵
