This magnificent old print from 1535 contains Martialis's epigrams in 14 books, published by Sebastian Gryphius at one of the most famous publishing houses of the first half of the 16th century.

#Bookvember Day 5

I had to wait on this one to visit my parents. This book was THE poetry book for me and my sisters. Huge, well loved illustrated hardback. Lovely mix of great poems. I liked the limericks, epigrams and other funny ones the most.

Why, if it prosper, none dare call it treason."

My senior year of high school, my Ancient Greek teacher brought out the epigrams volume in the Loeb classical library for the third-year students to read. The really dirty stuff wasn't translated into English, but rendered in Latin. We learned a ton of Latin that year on top of the Greek!

I'd want it just to have it on my bookshelf! It would be nice just to have it there!

But also, his little epigrams/anecdotes at the start of each chapter are great.

I am horrified by his TeX; glad I'll never have to use it.
But my Desert Islands Discs book will be Chap 3: Sorting & Searching.

It is at least passably good history and the performances aren't just imitations. The glasses help with Godard obv., but tossing off gnomic epigrams is what he did, and Zoey Deutch as Seberg owns the film with pure charisma and inhabits perfect mix of frustration and fascination.

Often I read the notes of a book before reading the text itself so I can go to the additional sources later. I'm left-handed, what can I say...

The brilliant Federico Finchelstein uses these quotes as epigrams in his "A Brief History of Fascist Lies."

Highly recommend.

Taking its stylistic cues from the movement, Richard Linklater’s ‘Nouvelle Vague’ charts the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Breathless’. Newcomer Guillaume Marbeck is an uncanny Godard, given to dispensing epigrams, but brittle & uncertain too, & pic fizzes with that era’s playfulness & mischief

... and his flamboyant personality and famous epigrams. His career was also famously cut short by his imprisonment for homosexuality in 1895, an event that led to his death in poverty in 1900 at the age of 46.

(2/3) Oscar Wilde is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and his imprisonment and death. While The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) was still being performed in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry prosecuted for criminal libel.

So exciting !! I have daydreamed about tackling a Martial 'Steadman' some day and so glad to see one out! (of course maybe some day I or others will tackle more of his massive corpus, but 140 epigrams is amazing!)

Bit of self-promotion: I have published a commentary on a selection of Martial's epigrams, so if you are a Latin teacher/instructor...or a fan of having Latin grammar and rhetorical devices analyzed...feel free to check it out.
