Adam Tooze understands the foolishness of "all of the above," "technology openness," "technology neutral," and all the other euphemisms to describe centrist acquiescence to fossil fuels for what they are: Dead ends.

Lets continue to focus on what wins, not useless technologies such as

Carbon capture
Direct air capture
Blue hydrogen
Electrofuels
Small and large nuclear
Biofuels
Biomass
Geoengineering
Any other "all-of-the-above"-policy technology

Electrofuels may be aviation’s most realistic bridge to a hydrogen future drop in compatible, scalable with green energy & far less resource limited than bio SAF. The challenge isn't land/chemistry but building clean infrastructure at a massive scale.

This is what’s been planned here. There are grand designs to provide 10% of the whole EU energy needs in Finland. Electrofuels, hydrogen etc, but that is a long road, does not happen overnight.

There's an abundance fantasist on Twitter who says trains are dead, we will all be flying supersonic on electrofuels and driving 100 MPH in AVs. But I am rather fond of 19th-century tech like bikes and trains.
The abundance fantasists are going to cook us all
If they really believe all this stuff, I have a hyperloop to sell them.

Whereas previously we imagined heavy trucks, short-distance shipping, light/propellor aviation might have to use electrofuels like hydrogen, ammonia, synfuels, it's increasingly easy to see batteries delivering comparable range and lifetime without the energy conversion losses.

and even barring that, with sufficient electricity we can always synthesize drop-in electrofuels or simply produce resistive heat at 1:1 efficiency (at a minimum)

Comparing different alternatives is tricky since they rest on so many assumptions. Electrofuels versus using CDR to offset fossil fuel oil depends on the cost of electricity, fossil fuels and CDR. The ISO chart below compares the interaction between them.
August 29, 2025 at 9:10 AM
NEW ANALYSIS: What role will CDR play for shipping?

Biofuels, onboard CCS, and durable CDR are likely to be cheapest for the majority of emissions. But many roadmaps center around electrofuels, despite them looking like the most expensive alternative, as with aviation.
August 29, 2025 at 9:10 AM
Why it matters: Biofuels capacity is crucial to meeting emissions goals. Aviation, marine, and rail make up 16% of WA’s GHG emissions.

Switching to SAF can cut emissions, create green jobs, and boost industries like agriculture.

Green fuels, such as synthetic or electrofuels (e-fuels), are liquid gaseous fuels produced with electricity from renewables.

Fossil fuel is a flammable carbon compound, or hydrocarbon-formed "naturally" in the Earth's crust from the buried remains.

What am I missing?

It is here. Electric aviation delivers a significant energy efficiency gain compared to Power-to-X fuels. However, eSAF (electrofuels and sustainable aviation fuels) will be essential for intercontinental flights – and even for shorter ranges involving larger aircraft.

Essential read: @gnievchenko.bsky.social ‪‪explains from experience why green hydrogen and derived electrofuels may not scale down in cost anywhere as rapidly as proponents hope. Another way to read this is as a very polite roast of Terraform Industries.

On va se battre sur la définition d'énergie carbonée.Si le bilan co2 est neutre, c'est pas carboné.

Sinon autant dire que les electrofuels sont carbonés. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro...
Ca perd tout son sens.
