The meaning of the song in its original context matters in how we understand it, but that doesn't mean we need to *keep* singing the original or replaying it uncritically when the context has shifted.

The idea that Black literary genius is only found in relationship to white, Western writing is absurd and dangerous. The relationship between Baldwin and Shakespeare isn’t as rich as the relationship between Baldwin and my own Black experience in America. #DisruptTexts

I'm playing around on here and looking at feeds to see if that's something that could be used to organize? I watched this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zmq...

I created a #DisruptTexts feed, which I think means anyone can add that feed to their account to quickly see all posts with that hashtag?
How to create Bluesky Custom Feed with muted words (3 mins)
Tip: If you want to look for multiple words, combine them in 1 block and use | ("pipe") in between to make your feed faster. For example: Putting in "pro-he...

My kids just watched the Trevor Noah interview with Jason Reynolds. I asked them what I thought were engaging questions, but they can’t get past the fact that Reynolds is a Black man. They’ve never read a book written by a Black man in school.

My Ss read Tupac’s A ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE as prep for Cisneros’s HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. My favorite discussion topics: food, gender roles, poetic analysis, blooming from ‘adversity.’

Anybody have dope ideas you love for HOMS? #DisruptTexts

I keep thinking about how if taught more books (and history) that focused on community and solidarity - and fewer stories of individual “hero’s journey” stories - maybe we’d all be a bit better off. #DisruptTexts

Hey #cleartheair #disrupttexts and #teachlivingpoets communities, I’m looking for black “love” poems to read and annotate with my Ss this week. I say “love” because traditional romantic love isn’t required. LOVE is big powerful and I want to capture that with my Ss this week.

Reflecting on what #DisruptTexts and @nenagerman mean to me this morning. Making space for inclusive, representative, and equitable texts matters because our students matter. Their future is at least as important as our collective past.

Following on from the classics convo--when was the first time during your schooling when you were introduced to a book outside of the Western cannon? My first was THINGS FALL APART by Chinua Achebe when I was in AP Lit my senior year of high school. #DisruptTexts
