We should do the same with other aspects of the economy - nationalise it, pay for it out of progressive taxation, de-commodify it and distribute according to need, not according to market imperatives. socialism 101.

Community land trusts are not communism . They are a smart way to de commodify exorbitant land prices and let people own their own homes.

Would take more than that. It would also require proper funding to social services, price fixing so that we delete the profit motive. De commodify inelastic markets( healthcare, education, housing, food, water, electricity, transportation)

Good, if city council is worried about affordability they should be working on ways to de-commodify housing, fund NYCHA to refurbish units & finance non-market housing.

Yes! And de-commodify tenure criteria.
And yes, now is the right time.

Shifting tax burdens to land value (LVT) would incentivize this outcome without having to confiscate anything. It would basically de-commodify land so that it wouldn’t be an attractive investment for hedge funds or speculators.

There are 16 million vacant homes in the US & less than 1 million people without homes.
Pundits keep saying we need to build more housing when what we need to do is confiscate homes & apartments kept vacant by landlords & mega-corporations for short-stay rentals & artificial price manipulation.

“the south” doesn’t really have to be abandoned or defended. That’s mostly just cope or posturing. It needs to be liberated from the boot of capital. And anyone fighting to de-commodify survival anywhere is helping to do that. They are my brother and sister

What I dream of is quality housing for renters - smaller mixed income apartment buildings integrated into walkable neighbourhoods and also subdivisions; at least 10% RGI apartments; co ops and land trusts that de-commodify housing and keep rents stable; 3/

I think we have to de-commodify Attention Itself as a viable source of income.
People involved in the transaction of monetizing Attention Itself will never do this voluntarily of course, and neither will a financially significant number of internet slop enjoyers.
But this makes everything worse.

Indeed. I like UBI funded by AI productivity superprofits. But Lisa is right (though Lisa, I don't see Bob saying do away with IP). Sure, it might be nice to de-commodify the creative sector in a postcapitalist way, but then big AI gets to exploit it even more aggressively? Not a fix?

If you want to de-commodify art, then stop buying and selling it! Make it, trade it, exchange it freely. The solution is less money, not more.
Of course, the rub is that you can’t have a career in that. Your hobby stays a hobby. You can’t fantasize about your dream job as an indie artist.
