Thanks for the great blog and reading suggestions! I will add that any early medievalists to the region should (in addition to Nara) pay a visit to Daigo-ji temple near Kyoto. The pagoda dates to the 10th century and is apparently the oldest structure in Kyoto.

Because many of you asked on a post a while back, my Instagram can be found on my Reddit profile. I take you with me on my guided photography tours through Japan that happen bi-annually in fall and spring. Goal is to make one post every week with a photography day. 😊 Hope you‘ll enjoy. After Fushimi Inari, we made our way to Daigo-ji, where autumn leaves framed the temple’s serene pond. Emperor Daigo's mausoleum is, appropriately, located a short walk from Daigo-ji temple, in Fushimi, in southern Kyoto. The mausoleum of his successor, Emperor Suzaku 朱雀天皇 (r. 930-946), is nearby. His reign saw the famous Taira no Masakado rebellion in the Kanto region.
