Through Foucault, Epictetus became important to me as a figure who revealed philosophy as a way of life and a practice of self-formation rather than a theoretical enterprise. Epictetus also served as a bridge to Zen Buddhism, particularly Dōgen, and from there to Zhuangzi.

It also came relatively late (post-Heian), so it was in part a reaction to the excesses of the Japanese Buddhism of the era. Soto's founder Dōgen went to China to study with Chan teachers there because he was disgusted with the state of things in Japan.

Heute traf mich beim Lesen eines jahrhundertealten Zen-Textes der Schlag - oder ein Blitz. Ich las etwas derart Wahres, das mich zudem jn meiner jetzigen Verfasstheit ansprach, als hätte Dogen Zenji ein Wurmloch in mein heutiges Hirn geöffnet. Ich bin noch immer verblüfft und bin dankbar dafür.

Is it just me or does Master Dogen ramble on excessively and only rarely get to a lucid point. I’m reminded of Foul Ole Ron from the Discworld series. Millenium and shrimp!
