I love it. Cozyweb.
I’ve been pasting googly eyes around the neighbourhood. That sort of thing?

It's arguably another way of describing the Cozyweb - decoupling from the techbro train and finding our people again. Ignore the bullshit, save pooches, do silly things.

4. "Stories are a vessel/marketing gimmick for ideas. The fun part's figuring out how to effectively transmit an idea. Biodiversity of ideas is critical. Dark forests/cozyweb is abdicating the commons+are dangerous. The tension between these two spaces is evolving. The enabling tech is very recent."

It's a timing issue: ActivityPub has maybe a decade to fix this, and hasn't. And in that decade, maybe 11-12m users?

I was once very enamoured of the Fediverse. But I had to conclude that while it's great for cozyweb, it's not going mainstream.

Welcome to the Fediverse, starry-eyed noob (TwitterMigration, day 3)
I discovered the Fediverse as I kicked MyHub.ai’s shiny new tyres in early 2020, and I’m kicking myself now for not diving in then.

It's exhausting. Alt social media has enough purity spirals without this one.

The protocols component each other well: AP for Cozyweb communities, AT for global-yet-decentralised conversations.

They face a common enemy, so why not make common cause?

The EC set up a test server but never really gave it much of a chance to succeed · the Comms people there only want reach, and limited it to "institutional" accounts.

I still think it could have a role, but only if they see its potential for Cozyweb communities, which they don't value rn.

Ayyyy, we talking cozyweb today.

Haven't read Ribbonfarm in ages, but there was a point where some of the articles were pretty interesting!

Talk of the cozyweb and death of blogging/general public social media feels pretty correct. I'm similarly not really fit for the new internet lol

Sounds like a really fully thought through approach to #Cozyweb spaces on the #Fediverse. If my last Fediverse account hadn't been deleted by an incompetent admin, I'd be kicking the tyres.

The title was an allusion to Cixin Liu’s “Three-Body Problem,” the Fermi paradox, or the apparent emptiness of the universe, as a strategic preference to remain invisible to predatory species. The writer Venkatesh Rao and designer Maggie Appleton later expanded on the idea of the “cozyweb.”

My first reaction, too:

Flight to the Cozyweb, the motion picture: "Watch in wonder as a bewildered population flees the toxic wasteland they once called home in search of a quieter, safer, saner life".

It's just so Amateur Hour, right? It's Ok for cozyweb, definitely, but the idea that it's good enough to replace X for the vast majority of people is simply laughable.

I really like the way the protocol competition has become (I'm not sure this is the right word) "warmer" recently? My perception is below, but what would I know? Sound right to you?
January 26, 2025 at 7:13 PM
Yes, my thoughts were more about how groups could self organise and manage themselves - what "cozyweb" looks like on different protocols - but we're thinking in the same space, clearly. And the code you're developing looks super useful.

One upside of #Meta abandoning moderation is that it may push people away from the wholly open “town square” / “everyone is an influencer” model of social networking into more #cozyweb self-moderated communities.

I’ve long suspected that’s a healthier approach to the internet, personally.
January 10, 2025 at 10:10 PM
... while ActivityPub has an incentive to keep the average followers/user low.

So broadcast-style social media seems better suited to the ATmosphere, which will probably remain dominated by a few servers, while the Fediverse is for our cozyweb spaces.../2

The question remains: Will the future of social networking be shaped by massive, unmoderated platforms—or smaller, thoughtfully curated communities? 🌟
What do you think? Which path do you see social media taking?

Have you read @kissane.bsky.social’s article “Against the Dark Forest” www.wrecka.ge/against-the-...

Kind of argues for carving out some of the public slop to be habitable and not just retreat into (privileged) cozyweb

The complex of ideas I’m going to call the Dark Internet Forest emerges from mostly insidery tech thinking, but from multiple directions.

The internet today comprises a “perilous aboveground” — the and a “cozyweb refuge underground” private spaces of retreat. But if you don't have that form of access? Should you “just hack through that forest — which is so much gnarlier now than it was when we built it?” www.wrecka.ge/against-the-...

Can a cozyweb be built on open protocols? I think so. Signal is the harbinger here. DeltaChat shows how to do it over an open network (email).
I see selection pressures pushing us toward a barbell distribution:

Slopnet: open public protocols hosting a riotous ecology of AIs.

Cozyweb: closed commons with semipermeable boundaries.
I don't really see a clear path where we keep an open internet that is not mostly full of AIs talking to each other. We can't reliably detect AI content, it is cheap and easy to generate, and there are lots of incentives to do so, even besides scams.

You can see the problem on all the social sites.

Slopnet generates noise, cozyweb metabolizes it and makes meaning.

This is a kind of dreamworld internet landscape. It takes on the shape of a diffusion algorithm. The medium is the message.
