FYI, for Americans, Kremer Pigmente has a 40% off sale while they close their New York City store. Are they the last colourman in New York City? https://shop.kremerpigments.com/us/ #painting #arttechnology #arthistory #mastoart

We were babysitting last night here at the Galactic HQ of Hivefleet Bonnacon and the 9 year old niece picked up the AK markers and made "Colourman".

“Exactly, Watson. Pathetic and futile. But is not all life pathetic and futile? Is not his story a microcosm of the whole? We reach. We grasp. And what is left in our hands at the end? A shadow. Or worse than a shadow — misery.”

— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Adventure of the Retired Colourman” […]

EncreIvore - Encre=ink Ivore=ivory - black ink made from burned ivory. In the era of e.g. Manet (who used quite a lot of black) a colourman would send a boy round to your studio to bring the dry pigments and oils which you would mix up yourself.. The actual Devil has nuffink to do with it.

How would Holmes have reacted if Watson said “he seemed like a normal guy”?

“Oh yes, he SEEMS normal, but underneath the facade is a wretch of a man, as we all are.”

Four Claudes bought for more than £10,000...one of these was perfectly miraculous. What colours short of bonâ fide sunbeams it could be painted in, I am not earthly colourman enough to say; but I did not think it had been in the possibility of things.

Castle Mills, York by Thomas Guy (1847–1909.) courtesy of York Museums Trust. Guy set up in business as a glass writer and medicine labeller in Clarence Street. He then became an oil and colour merchant, and in 1884 set up as an artist’s colourman and teacher.

visited this wonderful art shop today L. Cornelissen & Son founded in 1855 by Louis Cornelissen. Rumour has it J.M.W. Turner recommended to his friend Louis that London would be a good location to ply his trade. He set up & became
firmly established as an artists' colourman.
