It turns out Calscape *claims* there is coyote mint in stock at Cole Hardware and I need to pick up some patch putty anyways to smooth over some holes

Missed getting a small native bee on this native rose in California. The rose is struggling with habitat loss in San Diego County 😞
It is a Small leaf rose - Rosa minutifolia, it is a rare species barely crossing into San Diego county from Baja per Calscape
It’s a beauty, thorns are sooo sharp 🩸 🩹

Yeah, I was looking on Calscape at the range and sightings map for that one, and it seems they're just not down this way any more. 😞

Calscape is running a survey in partnership with a few other groups: morphonativeplants.github.io/redirect/. The images + alt text have more details.

Calscape mentioned up to 20’ tall and 20’ wide 😂 I have a little over an acre on a rocky hillside, so a large yellow plant sounds pretty good

This makes me want to plant Flannelbush - and Calscape says it tolerates rocky soils, which is exciting because my soil is VERY rocky 😆

Interesting tidbit I learned from another Calscape volunteer: there's a patent for "Jellybean" Monkeyflowers: patents.google.com/patent/USPP1.... (Looks like it expired in 2020 though.)

Why You Should Appreciate Native Plants: Ocean Spray Insights
For the past few years, I have observed one of our native shrubs to see what pollinators are visiting. Calscape has recorded Ocean Spray (Holodiscus discolor) as a host plant to approximately 14 species of Lepidoptera. Yet, I have actually never seen a single pollinator visiting the cascades of snowy white, delicate blossoms. I've also heard from a handful of local folks on San Juan Island.

The biggest problem is finding them in most commercial nurseries. The bg box nurseries tend to treat them as an oddity and continue to sell the usual non native crap. Calscape has been improving its listings but finding what you want in stock is hard. And for the record I am a Native plant fan.

Calscape says these guys don’t flower until their second year. This Hooker’s evening primrose was like, “nah, my stance is too wide for that.” #californianativeplants #gardening

As others have mentioned, these sites tend to be regional - Calscape for California.

California also has a thriving set in of native plant societies- California Native Plant Society with lots of local chapters

If you’re in California, Calscape will point you to reliable sources to buy plants you want. Lucky.

Wonderful to see this large Coulter's Matilija Poppy blooming in a neighborhood butterfly garden yesterday. This native to SoCal appears to do well in NorCal as well.💚
