FLOOR MOSAIC OF THE MONTHS, FRAGMENT WITH NOVEMBER AS ISIS, 375 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This fragment was part of a large floor mosaic depicting the months and seasons, from a wealthy domus in Carthage 2.0, the Roman version, which was the main city of Roman North Africa. The female figure represents November, which we know because she is holding a sistrum, a kind of rattle used in Isaic ceremonies. The main festival for Roman worshippers of Isis was the Isia, which occupied the last days of October and the first day of November. It was a long celebration that may have influenced the Christian feast of Easter: the first days were full of wailing and mourning for the death of Osiris, who had died at the hand of the evil god Set. The body of Osiris was cut into pieces and scattered across Egypt. Isis set out to gather them and reassemble her husband, and November 1 was the Heuresis or "finding", when Osiris returned to life and all was joyous. November 3 was the Hilaria or day of joy.

#SarcophagusSaturday today offers us a terracotta #cinerary #urn from #Athens, now in the #BritishMuseum. It dates from c. 300 BCE, and the painted and gilded #griffins show a strong #Persian influence, an inheritance from the by then divided empire of #Alexander the Great. #AncientBluesky 🏺
TERRACOTTA CINERARY URN, C. 300 BCE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This terracotta urn has the form of a vase with a conical lid, and the summit of the lid has a pinnacle in the shape of a small vase serving as a handle. White paint, worn away in places, covers the surface. The only decoration is four painted and gilded bull-griffin protomes at the shoulder of the urn. In C5 BCE Athens this urn would be unthinkable, due to the strong Achæmenid Persian influence visible in the griffins, but the Athens of the end of the C4 BCE was quite different. It had lost even nominal independence and after the battle of Lamia in 323 was subject to Macedonian rule, but the empire of Alexander and his successors brought some cultural cross-pollination. The ashes and bone fragments of 2 people were found inside.

I am so much looking forward to visiting the Roman (and Greek) galleries at the #BritishMuseum in 2 months. My timeline is full of #RomanBritain objects, many of whicv I'll be able to see there.
15yo is more into Greek god statues (thanks, Percy Jackson) but I think that's compatible interests.

A triangular plaque with ridged leaflike veining. Circular chi-rho monogram. British Museum explanation - “Chi-rho symbol. This consists of the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek; the Chi, which looks like a Latin 'X', and the Rho, which looks like a 'P', Often, but not always, thie symbol was combined with the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet: the alpha (A), and omega (w), These are a reference to a verse in the Bible: 'I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord' (Revelations 1: 8).

White-ground kylix (drinking-cup) with a delicate painting of Aphrodite, her hair bound in a sakkos, riding on a goose, the curling tendril of a plant held in her outstretched hand. The figures are outlined against the white background, with the inner details added in golden-brown glaze; purplish-red clay is used for the goddess's cloak and for the borders of her chiton (tunic). The painter's preliminary sketch is visible in places; the position and form of the tendril held by the goddess have been slightly altered from the original sketch, as have the outlines of the longest feathers on the end of each of the goose's wings. Two painted inscriptions read: ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΕΣ and ΓΛΑΥΚΟΝ ΚΑΛΟΣ. The first inscription, over the wing of the goose, is 'Aphrodite'; the second inscription is a phrase - 'Glaukon kalos', meaning 'Glaukon is handsome/beautiful/good'. I am forever flogging ancient glass, because in my mind there’s nothing that shows so much beauty and color by simply aging. Once pure cobalt blue, this 3rd c. BCE bowl has gained golden iridescence over time. It now resembles lapis lazuli. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

In the ancient #Roman world, even steelyard weights (counterbalances) could be made with first class artistry. Here, this bronze weight is shaped into the bust of a man, perhaps a Greek philosopher (or maybe the merchant!). 🏺 1/

Bronze steelyard weight in the form of a bust of a bearded and balding man, possibly meant to represent a philosopher. The lid in the head allowed the hollow-cast bronze body to be filled with lead to achieve the desired weight. In its current state it weighs 6.812 kg (15.02 lbs.). The patina of the bronze is a dark brown, with patches of gold bronze peeking through, which is a striking look.
