I’m so impatient!

I need to wait for the paint to dry and then add the finishing touches, but I just can’t help myself, I had to post a sneaky preview.

#MosaicMonday brings us to #Roman #Carthage in 375 CE, to a well-appointed #domus with a floor #mosaic showing the #seasons and #months. This fragment now in the #BritishMuseum shows #November as a priestess of #Isis, with a #sistrum in her hand. See the ALT text for why. #AncientBluesky 🏺

This retelling of Captain Cook’s death and the merging of two cultures is a trove of miraculously preserved wonders.

A lovely day out yesterday with the Brixton Umbrella Circle, we were invited to the British Museum to preview the new Hawaii Exhibition. Can’t post any images of the exhibition until it opens this week but we had a wonderful time and thanks to our Clare for organising🗿

The procession of gods on the broken horn are identified with painted inscriptions: Artemis, holding krotala (castanets ... odd); Apollo holding a kithara; Aphrodite, holding a tiny black swan; and Hermes, holding a caduceus. 🏺 #BritishMuseum 2/

Red-figure rhyton in the form of a blonde Dionysos
Red-figure terracotta rhyton (drinking cup) supported in the lap of a blonde Dionysos. The scene on the bell of the drinking horn has been cut off by about a third - probably damaged in antiquity then...

#SarcophagusSaturday today offers us a terracotta #cinerary #urn from #Athens, now in the #BritishMuseum. It dates from c. 300 BCE, and the painted and gilded #griffins show a strong #Persian influence, an inheritance from the by then divided empire of #Alexander the Great. #AncientBluesky 🏺

I am so much looking forward to visiting the Roman (and Greek) galleries at the #BritishMuseum in 2 months. My timeline is full of #RomanBritain objects, many of whicv I'll be able to see there.
15yo is more into Greek god statues (thanks, Percy Jackson) but I think that's compatible interests.

The iconic, delicately painted image on this kylix is of the goddess Aphrodite riding a goose through the air. Her hair is bound in a sakkos, and her transparent chiton is decorated with stars and bordered with a meander. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

I am forever flogging ancient glass, because in my mind there’s nothing that shows so much beauty and color by simply aging. Once pure cobalt blue, this 3rd c. BCE bowl has gained golden iridescence over time. It now resembles lapis lazuli. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

In the ancient #Roman world, even steelyard weights (counterbalances) could be made with first class artistry. Here, this bronze weight is shaped into the bust of a man, perhaps a Greek philosopher (or maybe the merchant!). 🏺 1/
