Hraunfossar; in Borgarfjörður, western Iceland) is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into Hvítá (Borgarfjörður), from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The name comes from the Icelandic word for lava (hraun) and the word for waterfalls (fossar).[1] The Hraunfossar are situated near Húsafell and Reykholt and the Víðgelmir lava tube is close by.

Many Icelandic folk tales have been associated with Barnafoss, the most famous being about two boys from a nearby farm, Hraunsás. One day, the boys' parents went with their ploughmen to a church. The boys were supposed to stay at home, but as they grew bored, they decided to follow their parents. They made a shortcut and crossed a natural stone-bridge that was above the waterfall. But on their way, they felt dizzy and fell into the water and drowned. When their mother found out what had happened, she put a spell on the bridge, saying that nobody would ever cross it without drowning himself. A little while later, the bridge was demolished in an earthquake.

The series of earthquakes began around 4 a.m. and continued into the morning. The largest earthquake measured 3.5 in magnitude and was felt widely in Mýri and Borgarfjörður. The activity is a continuation of the seismic activity that has been noticeable at Grjótárvatn since the fall of 2024. No sign of land rise Increased monitoring with GPS meters and satellite data has shown no signs of surface deformation. In November 2024, a GPS meter was installed in Hítardalur. At the end of April 2025, a meter was added to Hraunholt. In the spring of 2025, two gauges from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History were added to the monitoring system. Despite the increase in the number of gauges and more precise monitoring in the area, no land uplift has been measured, neither on GPS devices nor in satellite measurements from 2019 to 2025. Although no deformation/land uplift has been measured on the surface, this does not rule out the possibility that magma is present at great depths. These are the results of his research report published in March 2025. Scenario: Magma accumulation stops. Inflow ceases, magma intrusions solidify at depth, and seismic activity decreases over time Scenario: Activity increases and moves shallower. Earthquakes become more frequent and shallower, and deformation could begin to be measured at the surface. This would create an increased risk of rockfalls and changes in geothermal systems. Scenario: Magma reaches the surface and an eruption begins. This could result in short-lived explosions due to the interaction of magma and water, lava flows that could reach up to 30 km from the source, and gas pollution that is spread by wind and can reach up to 200 km from the eruption site. Photo: Karen Kjartansdóttir If the third scenario becomes a reality, the most likely sources are in four areas lying in different watersheds: Hítardalur (C1): Where magma can erupt to the surface near mountain slopes and form lava flows down into the valley. Grjótárdalur (C2): An area characterized by a sharp land slope where lava and hydrothermal eruptions can affect the course of the Grjótár River. Lava valley (C3): A potential source where an eruption could cause lava flows that follow the natural depressions of the valley. Langá in Grenjadalur (C4): An intake that could affect the Langá watercourse and cause both lava flows and changes in the river's flow. 4/4 The uncertainty is great. The solar storm system was upgraded to the Icelandic Meteorological Office's highest monitoring level at the beginning of 2025. The goal is to collect as much data as possible to better analyze the processes that are taking place and assess possible scenarios. However, uncertainty is high. The scenario could subside without further events, but it could also continue for years or end with an eruption. Comparisons with previous events, such as the magma intrusion at Upptyppingi in 2007 and seismic activity under Eyjafjallajökull in 1996, show that deep magma accumulation does not necessarily lead to an eruption. Eruptions in the Ljósufjalla system are considered to be small by Icelandic standards and the effects are primarily local. For example, the last eruption in the system occurred in the 10th century and formed Rauðhálsahraun. The eruption was limited in scope but left behind distinct lava formations that are still visible today. The volcanic systems on Snæfellsnes Peninsula are different from those on the Reykjavik Peninsula. It is important to keep in mind that the volcanic systems on and around Snæfellsnes are different from the systems on the Reykjavik Peninsula. Volcanic eruptions on Snæfellsnes Peninsula do not appear to be accompanied by fissure movement. There are no connections between volcanic systems on Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Therefore, activity in one system does not affect other systems nearby. Fewer volcanic eruptions have occurred in these systems over the last ~10,000 years compared to the Reykjanes Peninsula. This means that even if magma accumulates at Grjótárvatn and a possible eruption begins, the effects are likely to be local and not part of a larger eruption cycle like on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The only dedication to St Maurice was preserved at the church Bær in Borgarfjörður, consecrated by St Þorlakur. Sturlunga saga preserves the date of Snorri Sturluson’s death; he is said to have been killed on the night after the Mass of St Maurice (1241).

She says it is possible that some obstruction in the river caused this, but it will be easier to assess the situation as it becomes clearer. The flow in Hvítá has been gradually increasing since yesterday afternoon but appears to have reached equilibrium since around 4 am this morning. As it stands now, there appears to be no danger to the infrastructure, with the water reaching the same level as it was during the 2020 flood. The flood flows from Hafrafellslón into the channel of Svartá and from there into Hvítá in Borgarfjörður.

The water level of the Hvítá River is currently around 300 centimeters and has not changed since 8:00 pm last night, according to Elísabet Pálmadóttir, a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Residents in the area are advised to consider possible impacts on property and livestock on the banks of the Hvítá River. There is great uncertainty about the development of the runoff, but how fast the flow growth will be will determine much about the maximum flow and spread. The water level in Hafrafellslón, on the western edge of Langjökull, appears to be higher than ever before. In recent weeks, experts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office have been monitoring the development of the reservoir using satellite images. Hafrafellslón is a marginal reservoir and meltwater from the glacier accumulates in it during the summer. The speed of development largely determines where the peak flow will be and thus whether the spread of this flood will be greater than the August 2020 flood. In 2020, the bridge on Hálsasveitarvegur over the Hvítá River, at Kaldadalsvegur, was flooded. At various points further down the river, the flood had some impact, for example, a meadow at Brúarás was flooded. Residents in the area are therefore advised to consider the possible impact of a flood on property and livestock near the banks of the Hvítá River.
