2025/11/13 21:56 (20:56 UTC) STROMBOLI STATEMENT The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etnean Observatory, announces that, from an analysis of surveillance camera images, it has been observed that since approximately 19:30 UTC, a lava overflow has been underway from the North crater area, feeding a lava flow in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco. This overflow is accompanied by modest but continuous spattering activity from at least two vents in the North crater area. Explosive activity is continuing in the South crater area. From a seismic perspective, the average amplitude of volcanic tremors remains at medium levels. No significant changes have been reported in the occurrence rate and amplitude of explosion quakes. No significant changes have been detected in ground deformation signals. Further updates will be communicated promptly. N.B. Fax numbers are used in case of incorrect reception of email messages

Benedikt Ófeigsson, head of the Deformation Measurements Department, IMO, gave an interview about the events at Askja ( isolated earthquake, ground uplift ).

If this trend continues, it could end with an eruption, says a geologist, but then everything could fall into a state of complete calm and nothing would happen. A few days ago, an earthquake measuring 3.5 occurred in Askja, and while it may not be news that an earthquake is being measured in Askja, such large earthquakes are not common there. "Nothing very common, but they are not unique. It happens every now and then that there are earthquakes like this there, but they are not common at all," says Benedikt G. Ófeigsson, director of deformation measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. There can be many reasons for such a large earthquake. He says it's impossible to read anything specifically into this earthquake. "No, it can be difficult to read anything into individual earthquakes. There are many possible reasons for them and it's difficult to interpret such unique events, especially given that they happen every now and then. It's difficult to directly link this to the recent land rise and magma accumulation, but of course it's not out of the question." It's been over five years since Askja woke up, so to speak. For decades, land at Askja was stagnant, but that changed in the summer of 2022 and since then land has been rising rapidly. "Yes, at least since 1976 when people started measuring land changes in Askja again, it was just steady until now. It's 2021 that we see signs that there is going to be land rise and it was quite fast at the beginning and right up until mid-2023 when it started to slow down. It slowed down quite a bit but it was still steady after that and it has been ongoing land rise since, not with much change. 2/3 " What is this big landmass? " "This is quite a meter high in vertical terms," ​​says Benedikt. "As things stand now, we see no signs that anything is imminent" Geologists believe that the land rise is due to magma flowing under Askja at a depth of three to five kilometers and pushing the earth's crust upwards. There are certainly other possible reasons, but this is considered the most likely explanation. "On the other hand, we have not seen, for example, significant changes in the geothermal system, so this does not seem to be approaching any surface or to be starting to have a significant impact on the upper part of the earth's crust where geothermal activity is. So at least we are not seeing anything like that yet. But that often comes later." It's been over a year since Spegillinn last spoke to Benedikt about Askja. At the time, he said there were clear signs that Askja could erupt again, but there was no way to say when. "We don't really have any methods to predict anything about it, just with this activity and in reality we could just be seeing some temporary process that stops for a long time. But then it could also pick up tomorrow and we'll get a lot of seismic activity and more deformation and something happens in a short time. But as things stand now, we don't see any signs that anything is imminent. What we're doing now is just monitoring and then reporting if there are any changes." There is a very dense network of meters in Askja that has been installed there in recent years. Therefore, it is possible to monitor the development there very closely. "Yes, yes, we have Askja well monitored, it is quite safe to say that. But it is always a bit difficult to operate this network in the winter up in the middle of the highlands, so there are quite gaps in it sometimes. But in the summer, when there is tourist traffic there, we have it very well monitored." It is difficult to say how much expansion Askja can withstand before the earth's crust ruptures. The last eruption in Askja was in 1961 - a huge lava eruption that lasted five to six weeks. Then the Vikraborgir crater series was formed and Vikrahraun flowed down onto the plains east of Askja. Before this eruption, there were no measurements of land uplift, so there is very little knowledge of changes in the volcano before the eruption in 1961. It is therefore difficult to say how much Askja can withstand a lot of expansion before the crust breaks and starts to erupt. "And there was quite a bit of land uplift following that, right up until '72, which I think was the last measurement. Then there was a little break in these measurements in Kraflueldar, but then after Kraflueldar when people started measuring there again, they saw that the land uplift had stopped and it had started to subside, so that is really all we have." "So you don't know what Askja can handle?" "No, we don't know, and it could be a lot longer before anything happens. We really have no idea." 3/3 as 5 pics

"Approaching some kind of end" Landslides and magma accumulation under Svartsengi continue, but are slowing down, according to Benedikt Gunnar Ófeigsson, director of deformation measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. "We just have to wait and see if this trend continues. There is still little seismic activity in the area and we are just in a certain state of waiting," says Benedikt. By the end of last month, about 14 million cubic meters of magma had accumulated under Svartsengi from the last eruption that ended on August 5th, which was the ninth eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar series since the eruption began there in December 2023. If we look at the eruptions at the Sundhnúk crater series since March 2024, we can see that the amount of magma that has flowed from Svartsengi each time varies quite a bit, from 12 million to 31 million cubic meters. Increases uncertainty as land growth slows You say that the landmass has slowed down. What does that mean? "It means that there is an underlying flow somewhere deep that is decreasing over time and has probably been doing so slowly. This means that it is approaching some end, but we don't know what that means in time. It adds to the uncertainty as the speed of the land rise decreases," says Benedikt. Sigdalur had formed over the magma passage through Grindavík town and large fissures had opened, damaging buildings, streets and pipes throughout the town. The first eruption in the series began on December 18. We have learned a lot of lessons. "We have learned a lot since these natural disasters began two years ago and we are still learning. The event has been developing all this time and it never behaves the same. Gradually the intervals between eruptions are getting longer. In the beginning it was more to the south but now it has been developing to the north. There is nothing in the data that tells us how this is going to continue," says Benedikt. He says that the area is the most monitored spot in the country, but gradually more measuring devices have been installed. The Meteorological Office has also been collaborating with the University of Iceland and foreign universities, where developments are being closely monitored.

Sometimes I wonder if adults have forgotten how to read and simply can no longer apply the information to reality.

This applies not only to the ultra-dangerous beach of Reynisfjörður, but also to active eruptions ( or volcanic areas in general ).

All pics Dangerous incident in Reynisfjörður Magnae Malachi recently traveled to Iceland and posted a video on her TikTok page of children who were almost swept out to sea by waves in Reynisfjörður. The two children appear to have been traveling with their parents and younger siblings when the incident occurred, and it is clear that they could not remember much about the time they were taken away. The video begins by showing a flashing yellow warning light that is on the beach to warn people of the danger that exists at any given time. It shows the children running away from the wave that is reaching them, losing their footing and, fortunately, being swept closer to their parents rather than out to sea. The video ends with the whole family walking away as if nothing had happened. In early August, an eight-year-old girl died in similar circumstances on the beach, and the alert level has been increased as a result.
