Also an interesting fungus on some Gorse {Poplar Bracket, maybe?} + an actual photo of some birds! Ok, blobs, but a Big flock of thrushes {Fieldfares only heard, could be others with them} went over & I did my best 🤷

The day's weather in a photo. Teeny tiny bit of ACTUAL SUNSHINE WOOOO!!! in between massed rain and More Rain {with Extra Rain for afters} Tiered bracket-ish fungus growing on dead Gorse stem. The usual Yellow Brain on nearby plants, but this stood out. Very white edges and underneath, with ochry yellow on the upperside near the base. Poplar Bracket is the closest I can find in the Big White Fungus Book {That's Phillips, btw} More than half of 190+ thrushes {I counted 196, but couldn't get them all in one photo to be certain}, with only Fieldfares calling {and they went almost overhead, I'd have heard anything else vocalising}, which flew over - presumably heading to roost - in a gap in the late afternoon rain. I know they're funny-shaped blobs, but they are thrushes, honest.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme set by Alan @alan678.bsky.social is #OddCouples, two different birds in one capture. I spotted the Cormorant and Kingfisher and didn't initially spot the Kingfisher. Taken on the Water of Leith in Edinburgh. This is a a Lesser Black-backed gull robbing a Puffin of it's catch. The Puffins have to run the gauntlet of the pirate gulls waiting to intercept them and rob them of the fish they are taking back to their single chick in the nest burrow. The Puffin has a choice here. It can give up it's catch or risk being killed. This was taken on the Isle of May National Nature Reserve off the east coast of Scotland. The Puffin is giving up some of it's catch here. I think it was trying to see if it could escape with at least something.

It is about 10–12 cm long (slightly larger than a golf ball) with a mix of blue, yellow, white, and green plumage. The male chaffinch is a small, colourful garden bird, similar in size to a Robin (roughly 14-16 cm long). It is often identified by its striking, contrasting colours: a blue-grey crown and neck, a bright, rusty-pink breast, and a brownish back.

February 14-17 is the Great Backyard Bird Count — and before you scroll past thinking this is a cute hobby for retirees, understand what this data actually does. Last year, 456,000 people in 200+ countries submitted 565,000 checklists over 4 days. That data — your data, from your window, during your coffee — directly feeds into eBird, the largest biodiversity database on Earth. HERE'S WHAT 15 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME PRODUCES: → Real-time population tracking that detects species decline 2-3 years before traditional surveys → Migration timing data that updates protected habitat zones → Winter range expansion maps used by the EPA and USDA to adjust pesticide application windows → Evidence that has directly triggered emergency protections for 12 species since 2010 This is not symbolic. This is the largest coordinated wildlife census on the planet and it runs on volunteers who sit by a window and count. HOW TO DO IT (it's absurdly easy): 1. Pick any 15-minute window between Feb 14-17 2. Sit somewhere you can see birds — window, porch, park bench 3. Count the highest number of each species you see at one time 4. Submit at birdcount. org (free, takes 2 minutes) You don't need to identify every species. The Merlin Bird ID app (free, by Cornell) identifies birds by photo OR by sound — hold your phone up, it tells you who's singing. WHY FEBRUARY MATTERS MORE THAN SPRING: February counts reveal which species survived winter — and which didn't. A missing species in February is an early warning. Last year's count detected a 23% decline in Evening Grosbeaks across the Northeast — data that triggered an emergency habitat review within 6 months. Your 15 minutes on Friday isn't birdwatching. It's surveillance. And the birds need witnesses.
