hamburger and ham today for #blug
12/15/25 - classic double cheeseburger and a ham and cheese Hamburger America, home of a hamburger. sit at the counter and watch a line cook feed bun halfs into the combo buttering/toasting machine. to me this is hypnotic and meditative. i came here often enough in our first year in the city that the hostess eventually asked my name. i told her, and she told me hers, and i haven't seen her since. They usually have a monthly burger special highlighting a different hyper-regional burger from anywhere in the country, but the menu says they don't have one lined up until january, so this time i pair the classic cheeseburger with a ham and cheese, one of their b-side staples. they have grilled cheese and egg salad and an assortment of flavored milks/egg creams and i've always just stuck to the burgers and a dr pepper. My mom used to send me to school with a ham and cheese in a brown paper bag every day. i preferred a straight peanut butter sandwich but my best friend was allergic and i sat with him at the peanut free table every lunch. this ham and cheese at Hamburger America in 2025 is a far removed from those ham and cheeses at the peanut free table at plainfield elementary in the early aughts, but my brain connects them, as brains do. An old man at the opposite end of the counter chews ice cubes and reads the paper with sunglasses on. the sidewalks are icy as hell today, and i can picture this guy taking a spill. he's paying out now, with cash. be careful old man. Hamburger America is good, i'll keep coming back. i'll come back in january and try whatever this country cooks up where the map creases. || derek

12/11/25 - chicken katsu on rice with curry sauce At Chef Katsu in clinton hill. down the street from pratt institute, so there's always students dressed in black eating japanese curry here and talking about design school things. There's a cold wind blowing and i ordered accordingly. but on a cold day you order a hot lunch and a hot drink and while you wait for your hot lunch and hot drink you sit in a hot restaurant and shed layers and start sweating and looking thirstily about at refreshing iced beverages ordered by ones who plan ahead. that's not me. The curry is warm and the rice is tender and the cutlet is crispy. there's nothing much to say about the food other than "👍". "👍" is great for a day like today, don't get me wrong. A big group of students just left, so the door was open long enough to bring in a lot of cold air. i took the opportunity to finally take a sip of my tea. "👍" || derek

12/10/25 - tailor I have anxiety about stuff. every time i think about going to a tailor my chest shrinks and my neck gets bigger and my eyes bug out a little bit and dart back and forth. i have anxiety w/r/t going to a tailor. what the hell? I've never really been to a tailor, so why does it stress me out? I've had things altered — my wedding suit comes to mind. i need to get that altered again, actually; first it went in and now it needs to go back out. that was an in-house service, i pulled the suit off the rack and they pulled out the measuring tape. i've never taken something out of my closet and hiked it over to a tailor and said "here, this things fits like ass. can you fix it?" But i like to look nice. i take pride in the way i dress. and i buy a lot of stuff secondhand, so sizing off the rack is a crapshoot. i've got all these pants laying around that i like but which don't really fit right. much to my chagrin, a pair of pants never *really* looks nice if they don't fit right. for year — YEARS — i've been threatening to take them to get altered. and then my chest shrinks and my neck grows and eyes start darting around. nervous systems are funny. I think the anxiety stems from the fear of a communication barrier (not a language barrier, though that can be a factor. tailors are one of those skilled crafts-people that most english speaking countries have decided they're too mighty to produce). for comparison, i've never figured out the delicate art of telling a barber what i want, but hair grows back! if i could ruin a hairstyle forever because i can't figure out how to tell my barber what i need, i'd just let it grow and grow. I'm running out of space. the point of all this is self-congratulatory; i got off my ass and took a pair of pants to the pants-barber last week, and i picked them up today. my wife got them for me for christmas years ago and for the first time i'm wearing them and they're comfortable. and that's the whole thing. || derek

12/9/25 - duck confit, green apple, fig, mustard, arugula, caramelized onion and brie on ciabatta Sandwich is called "duck au fig" and they sell it at Sandwich Board at the edge of the bowery and chinatown and potentially several other microneighborhoods jammed into the lower east side of manhattan, the residents of which might bristle at this sentence for any number of reasons. i'm trying to resist the compulsion to spend 20 minutes mapping out boundaries so i can most properly place this sandwich counter. my dad's map obsession didn't pass my way, nor did his love of accuracy. but sometimes i catch my reflection and see the way i'm standing and think "i got that from him." My order here is another kind of reflection entirely. yesterday i ate and wrote about a sandwich that was monotonous and disappointing, so today i abandoned my instincts (my instincts aren't all that into apples on sandwiches) and ordered the ingredient list that promised sweet, fatty, tangy, bitter, and gamey all at once. plentitonous. homophonic. complex. The sandwich i got wasn't as dense of a chord as i imagined, but i'm by no means upset at what it is instead. it's not music notes combining into cacophony, it's color notes combining to form a new hue entirely. i can still look closely and identify the halftones, the gaminess of the duck, the tartness of the green apple, the richness of the confit and caramelized onions, but if i close my eyes and take a bite i can imagine myself partaking in some alien fruit. a new flavor. It's an excellent sandwich, but there's more i can think to ask of it. i'm missing the sharp edges that the arugula and the mustard should be providing. the brie doesn't have much to say. and not enough salt! but not by much. i'm excited to come back here, and i might not order this sandwich again soon but i'll happily recommend it. || derek

#blug back in williamsburg back in federoff's where they play goodfellas on repeat all day everyday. it's the close-up of the guy hanging frozen in a pork truck leering over my right shoulder now. what a picture.
12/8/25 - roast pork with provolone and broccoli rabe on italian roll, with dipping broth I'm making my way down the menu at federoff's in williamsburg (finally, after having the cheesesteak here a few times already. you find the right sandwich and you have to drill down on it a little bit so you know you've gotten the full picture). they brand themselves a "roast pork" place and not a cheesesteak place. let's see. It's grossly cold today, with a stiff breeze cutting into us from our neighborly border-mates up north. almost without thinking i resort to base survival instincts, taking an irresistible sip of the dipping broth before digging into the sandwich. as best i can tell it's just straight broth (with a lonely rosemary sprig relaxing in the hot tub). it's beautiful. this is why we developed taste buds, right? my brain is screaming for nutrient-rich sustenance and my tongue has locked on. i'd like to order a mug-full sometime. i don't see that as an option on the menu. damn. The sandwich is a slight disappointment, but for the best reason i can think to be disappointed: too much of a good thing. the pork is succulent and sloppy, and piled deep, to the point where the topping rabe is structurally exposed, rendering the whole vessel impossible to dip without losing substantial broccoli bits. the rabe is tender and flavorful, but tastes more garlicky than vegetal, and the rich fattiness of the pork is desperate for a bright veg to balance it. the provolone, sharp as it might be, definitely doesn't balance out the overall roundness. provolone is one of the roundest cheeses i can think of! and sin of all sins, the whole thing is a touch undersalted. Again, though, we're talking too much of a good thing. this sandwich is immensely rich, fatty, succulent, round, unctuous, hearty, circle whichever adjective you prefer. after i finish it off, i chase it with left-over dipping broth. you never know on a day like today. || derek

12/5/25 - Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair At the intermission i texted a note to myself: 'halfway through, but everything i came for is from here on out.' that's how i take notes, i text them to myself. not during a movie usually. but it was intermission. I wasn't saying i was just here for Volume 2 — The Whole Bloody Affair is the first and second Kill Bill movies smushed together — but that the experience i came for was them together, and at the halfway point i'd only just seen Volume 1 by itself. i'm used to that, i've done that before. it's the second feature that makes the double feature. I had forgotten how indulgent tarantino gets in Volume 2, specifically after — spoilers — after Budd and Elle get got. so much talking. Esteban in the brothel and Bill in the house, each apparently pent up and ready to chat. i don't dislike the order of operations or the denouement itself, but as the final hour of a 4 hour operation, it feels excessively wordy. Budd's chapter is better than i had remembered. i've always liked the rock salt shotgun and the texas funeral, but as it lived in my head the madsen performance was a little chewy and the general palette of the sequence (barstow's armpit) is flat against the competition. i was wrong on both counts. no.. madsen is pretty chewy, but he's never boring to watch and i like the way he anchors this section at a more deliberate tempo after the energy ramps up so high before the intermission. as for the barstow of it all, i bring to this viewing a greater appreciation for 1. johnny cash, 2. western wear, and 3. the weirdo character actors all around the edges here. (speaking of western wear, i think Budd changes outfits twice in the half day leading up to the burial. they all look great. what he's wearing when he pulls the shotgun trigger? i would like to wear that.) The China sequence is magnificent. i've always liked it but it was never my favorite until this viewing. starting with Bill telling the "burning of shaolin" legend with flute punctuation (compare this to later, when carradine is tasked with relaying tarantino's bulbous theories of superman, and you'll see what i mean about indulgence). the incomparable gordon liu as pai mei. the training montage. the rza beat. this isn't just this movie at its finest, this is movies at its finest. not even to mention uma! Uma thurman. tarantino has always been an asshole who makes good movies, and sometimes the good movie part makes people forget he's an asshole and sometimes the asshole part makes people forget he makes good movies. what i'll never understand are the ones who insist his movies are all style and no heart, no emotional valence, no humanity. have they never seen uma thurman in kill bill? i'm not the first to note this weekend that uma is the one who wins the most from combining the two volumes. her ferocity and physicality is granted, but what's made clear across the bloody affair is the fear, the naïveté, the tenderness. she's a storm blowing somehow in all directions at once. always dangerous. always worthy of our trust. After all the indulgence of the brothel and the superman explication comes a final flashback which shows our lead waiting on the results of a pregnancy test. one last chance for thurman to reinvent the role of beatrix kiddo. it's magnetic. i was drawn to this scene and it's warm optimism more than i ever have been. it doesn't work without uma thurman. none of this does. When sonny chiba's hattori hanzo finishes crafting a reaper's scythe of a samurai sword for our hero, he claims that with it God would be cut down. early on in the movie, we're told (in voiceover presumably also performed by chiba) that a warrior's path to revenge, should it run through "the lord God or Buddha himself", requires the warrior to strike the deity down. in the final scene, the true last chance for thurman to define her role forever (i lied before), beatrix writhes on the floor of a bathroom clutching a stuffed lion, sobbing, laughing, and whispering several times over, "thank you". i don't know what god or power she thinks to credit here at the end of her bloody path, but i believe her. i believe her. || derek

mall thoughts #blug
I'm on the mezzanine level overlooking thousands of marble tiles glued to an atrium. big glass roof victorian style, a la crystal palace. massive staircase taking up half the floorplan and a hundred men in suits and women in suits are having their picture taken on the stairs. it took them 20 minutes to gather and takes 20 seconds for them to disperse. It's a mall. it's always a mall. we yearn for big open architecture and building it is easy, but then you have to fill it with something. big stairs and a santa claus by the windows looking out over the throat where the hudson river meets the bay. louis vuitton and bottega veneta and an equinox and i came here to pick something up from a store i won't name because my wife reads these sometimes (merry christmas, hon, you'll find out eventually). It's always a mall. when i play elden ring i explore massive structures filled with naught but a tarnished and some beastly demi-god and think "this would be a mall". our collective love of big open architecture reflects back at us in our video games, where nobody pays rent and luxury real-estate developers are nonexistent. What's wrong with a mall? i'm here, aren't i? i could have chosen another store location to pick up my order from, it just so happened that the website autofilled this one. now having come here i now get to sit on a decently comfortable bench at one of dozens of empty tables and sit and type unmolested and shed layers because i dressed for the bitter cold but it's quite temperate in here. i could watch the sun set over the bay and the skaters on the rink outside if i hadn't sat down with my back to them, but even so i look over my shoulders and they're there, and i'm warm. The stores aren't for me but maybe they're just here to subsidize all these benches and tables and windows and HVAC for me, for us, for the public. that's what people say at least. doesn't satisfy me much. i hate malls, and i reserve the right to hate malls. small architecture forever.

i found a delightful patio!!! #blug
12/3/25 - pork katsu, mustard mayo, shredded cabbage, house sauce on sliced shokupan I'm sitting on a $250 camp chair and everything is sage green and there's a misting humidifier keeping my skin soft and supple. my original plan fell through and this is a good backup. i'm in greenpoint. i'm in Taku Sando. it's a warm welcome. The sandwich was good and not great, and that's all i needed today. harsh of me. the sandwich was better than good, it was solid. it was dependable. it was piled with cabbage in a happy way. the apparently house-made milk bread was smushy and soggy in a happy way. the pork wasn't overseasoned or overfatty or overwhelming in any direction on any axis. it was sweet and tender and slightly forgettable and i'm so content. it was better than good and not quite great and they were playing a mix of De La and japanese hip-hop while i ate, and now city pop. i keep getting distracted by wisps of vapor from the humidifier making french curves between my keyboards and my eyes. when i lean my head back it just catches the edge of a counter behind me stacked with extra seat cushions and cups of plasticware and a napkin dispenser that i used amply against the house sauce and mustard mayo that wanted a piece of me. i could fall asleep here. i think they'd let me. They wouldn't for long, i'm sure. they shouldn't. i have to go grocery shopping. i have to write an essay pitch. i have to find some dr pepper somewhere nearby. i'm unsatisfied by the fast casual insistence on stocking only glass bottle coke and art-directed local seltzers. Taku Sando, a block from the east river on greenpoint ave. i'll come back, if not for the sandwich (again, completely solid!), then for their patio setup. hell of a spot to sit and write. next time maybe i'll bring a book. || derek

12/1/25 - mortadella, salami, hot spread, pickles, cheese, mustard, special sauce on a bun i have to sit back and chill out. it's a rainy disgusting day outside and i haven't eaten anything until this sandwich. a few cashews this morning. it's so hard to find food around the house on a rainy day. it's supposed to be snowing today, or was. i have to sit back and chill out or i'm gonna start... this kind of sandwich threatens my writing. threatens my composure. it's embarrassing to write about stuff that bowls you over. i can pick at mediocrity; get snooty/snippy, and cutesy wordplay is more forgivable with acid for balance, and i like my cutesy wordplay. i take a bite and start thinking about sandwiches from my past. dammit. i've never formalized a 'top five sandwiches' list and i bite into this sandwich and start taking those steps, getting my affairs in order. and then i remember how hungry i was and how rainy it is outside. hedge. hedge. hedge! please! i'll come back sometime having heaped praise on a sandwich and if it lets me down i'll be crushed. "it was rainy and miserable that day" i'll remember. "i had a handful of cashews for breakfast". Food network did this show for a while, "The Greatest Thing I've Ever Eaten". i don't know if that was the name but that was the conceit. i can see myself on the set of T.G.T.I.E.E. soppily explicating this sandwich with too many adverbs over disjointed b-roll playing of generic diners at generic "west village" cafes. love isn't shameful but it's somehow so shame-inducing. Dammit again i haven't even said where i am. i'm revisiting Fonty's, where a few weeks ago i had a tuna melt that changed my mind forever about tuna melts. i came here because i didn't want to walk far in the rain and it's close to the subway! this isn't a scientific project by any means. they call this sandwich "the parsi" and it's one of the best i've had. one of the best i've ever had. || derek

someone decided predator badlands can be fun instead of seaworthy, and i'm grateful #blug
12/1/25 - Predator: Badlands You don't have to watch Predator: Badlands long to realize this is a whiteboard type movie: you can imagine each setpiece originating as an idea tossed out all in the same brainstorming session, and whatever dramatic scaffolding they set up is there to serve those ideas. i like that. it's pragmatic. it's lean. To that extent they borrow the same vaporous maneuvering as a good sitcom might use to place its jokes. real life is beholden to norms and manners and a bad sitcom will see its characters reflect those norms, reacting to absurdity with discomfort, or to rudeness with offense. naturalism kills comedy. it gets in the way of the next joke, it ruins the pace. it also kills action. show me an action movie that insists upon the natural response to a punch in the face or a 40 foot fall and i'll ask if we can watch something else. But don't let me get ahead of myself, and don't let anyone tell you that Badlands keeps its nose clean from start to finish. it does find moments to insist upon its own dramatic relevance. it tries to too hard to make a case for its characters that are at worst boring and at best unoriginal. The greater sin is its tunnel-vision regarding the more primal stakes. the written drama is pre-ordained to be faff, but there's room for narrative within the action. ostensibly a runt predator goes head to head with a great nightmare of a beast, or so we're told. but he's a weak runt only when it's convenient for him to be so. and the great nightmare of the beast is treated with the same respect as all the garden variety beasties our sometimes runt has to work his way through. i walked out at the end with all these un-cashed cheques. || derek

11/25/25 - Wake Up Dead Man We went to see the new Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, at the Paris Theater, which netflix owns and operates to satisfy the wealthy liberalism of new york's uptown elite class, keeping them fed and satisfied while the rest of the country starves for hi-quality 35mm theatrical runs of their favorite streaming sensations. or something. Especially when placed next to the tight tolerance jewelbox construction of the first Knives Out movie, which accounts fastidiously for every dangling thread, Wake Up Dead Man feels loose, with parts that shift and slide against each other as the puzzle rotates in Blanc's hands. this is true of both the mystery and the tone. where Knives Out wrapped a bow on each arc and micro-arc with a punchline, Wake Up Dead Man lets words and scenes trail off, punting resolution in the same way it punts The Jesus Question on all of its subjects' minds. It's built around that Question, or doesn't shy away from it at least. There's a lot of religion here. raging against it, cheering it on, questioning, expositing. the first act is narrated entirely by josh o'connor's pious Father Jud character, so we meet the players and see events unfold through his lens of earnest religious probing. the eventual presence of the rationalist benoit blanc doesn't hedge or antagonize that dense grappling with God, but he does temper it. They don't make the mistake of squeezing dramatic juice like lesser movies would from the annihilative matter/anti-matter of Father Jud's faith and Benoit Blanc's lack thereof (a fruit without much juice to begin with if you ask me). instead the two central characters are placed on the audience's shoulders, not to guide anyone's actions but to interpret them. you get to decide who the angel is and who's the devil, but that's also not really the point; your interpretation of the events at hand are secondary to their unfolding. I have much to say and not enough room to say it. happy Thanksgiving. derek

11/25/25 - 3 fish tacos Eating at Los Mariscos in tourist-cramped chelsea market in the inhospitably antiseptic neighborhood of chelsea (or the meatpacking district. it's one of those, and i'm not sure which. the sterility remains either way). chelsea market is a converted snack factory, formerly of the nabisco corporation, in its current state owned by google. neat. Los Mariscos is at the edge of the once factory, and in the heart of it is the original Los Tacos No.1 -- presently the most famous/vaunted nyc taco joint, with 9 locations around manhattan -- and there's a tight and twisty hallway connecting the two spots. Los Tacos serves land-based meats and Los Mariscos (spanish for "seafood") serves meats of the sea. They're related somehow, beyond just the geographical connection; Los Mariscos uses a nearly identical design language for their menus and signage. so for years i told anyone who would listen that Los Mariscos is just "the baja Los Tacos" or something like that. but now that i think about it, i've never read or heard anything that confirms this connection. they each have separate websites, neither of which have 'about' sections or mention the other institution in any way. both of the websites were made using Bentobox, some kind of web service for restaurants. the domain name for Los Mariscos' website ends with a "1". hmmm. The fish tacos are terrific. every time i eat here i get starry-eyed about the shredded cabbage topping which to me is a sign of success, cabbage being the lowliest of all the present ingredients. everything all together is crisp and full-flavored and bright. not overly fishy (a positive). i'd like to try everything on the menu but i'm allergic to 2/3rds of it. i realize that makes the fish tacos a risk for me. they're worth the risk. || derek

some baked goods today #blug
11/24/25 - cinnamon bun/pumpkin pie Hani's -- pronounced "honey's" -- Bakery in the east village, which is about a year old. Elise ran there and i took the train. i beat her there by a few minutes, so i watched her location and inspected the blob of deconstructivist architecture next door at 41 Cooper Square, which i've learned was designed by pritzker award winner Thom Mayne. i don't have much good to say about the building but i also didn't get much of a look at it. We were here on a cinnamon roll mission so we ordered a cinnamon roll. they call it cinnamon 'bun', which is the same thing. the pumpkin pie looked good so we got a slice of pumpkin pie, which they call pumpkin pie. This place is real luxy. custom oak built-ins from front to back, terrazzo everywhere, couple types of tile, hella sconces. the servers are all wearing these heavy chore coats with the seam down the back. you can tell they're expecting a lot of business. Luckily it's uncrowded on a monday morning so we take seats at the counter with our tray, a big round cake tray with a paper doily on it and our baked goods on the doily. They're trying to be famous for these cinnamon rolls, which are baked in individual tins and frosted with a thick icing that stays piled on top instead of draping down the sides like a glaze; a cupcake effect (probably why they call it a bun instead of a roll). ours was good but not excellent. that icing is heavy and cream-cheesy and the sweetness overwhelms the perfect brioche bread. the cinnamon filling is scant. the bread really is perfect, though. The pumpkin pie picks up the slack big time. beautiful piece of pie, in appearance and taste. it's not burnished and cracked and rustic like we see a lot of these days. fluffy balanced filling and buttery crust and it's topped with a torched meringue that brings creaminess and some marshmallow-y charm and it's not overly sweet. you might not know you're hiding a bad dale cooper impression until you try this pie. | derek

#blug laundry day
11/21/25 - laundromat I have very little to nothing on my mind today at the laundromat. the laundry-o-matic. There's a box of tracts on the counter nearby. tracts. does everyone know what tracts are? hundreds of tracts, all in spanish, except a few in the back corner. this one is called "The Seed of Sin". i read through it and i have a lot of half-formed feelings about the contents but i don't want to write about them. i'm doing laundry. There are a handful of vending machines in the corner and they're kept stocked which might be very easy because i've never seen anyone use one of these vending machines. If there are mostly spanish tracts in this box of tracts does that mean the responsible party is targeting spanish speakers or are the english tracts, the "The Seeds of Sin"s and such, flying off the shelf? the box, like the vending machines, is well stocked. And if we're talking about machines nobody uses, there are two ~45 inch flatscreen TVs mounted on one side of the laundromat and one large box of a TV in a cubby on the other side. a real 2003 special. i watched my buddy play kingdom hearts on a tv just like that. i've never seen any of the 3 turned on. And there are these overhead fans with no lightbulbs in the sockets and they're never turned on. They're all amenities, i guess. not really the tracts, but the other stuff. they're here to keep us fed and entertained and climate-controlled while we wait on the automatic laundry machines. and if i was enterprising and bright-eyed i'd incorporate the non-use of these amenities into some clever theory i'm developing about what people *need* from the laundromat vs. what people *want* from the laundromat and some grand truth these signs point toward not just regarding laundry but people, and commerce, and experience. but i decided long ago that until someone puts a gun to my head i don't have to waste all that mental effort on such a useless exercise. i simply don't want to. || derek
