12/9/25 - duck confit, green apple, fig, mustard, arugula, caramelized onion and brie on ciabatta Sandwich is called "duck au fig" and they sell it at Sandwich Board at the edge of the bowery and chinatown and potentially several other microneighborhoods jammed into the lower east side of manhattan, the residents of which might bristle at this sentence for any number of reasons. i'm trying to resist the compulsion to spend 20 minutes mapping out boundaries so i can most properly place this sandwich counter. my dad's map obsession didn't pass my way, nor did his love of accuracy. but sometimes i catch my reflection and see the way i'm standing and think "i got that from him." My order here is another kind of reflection entirely. yesterday i ate and wrote about a sandwich that was monotonous and disappointing, so today i abandoned my instincts (my instincts aren't all that into apples on sandwiches) and ordered the ingredient list that promised sweet, fatty, tangy, bitter, and gamey all at once. plentitonous. homophonic. complex. The sandwich i got wasn't as dense of a chord as i imagined, but i'm by no means upset at what it is instead. it's not music notes combining into cacophony, it's color notes combining to form a new hue entirely. i can still look closely and identify the halftones, the gaminess of the duck, the tartness of the green apple, the richness of the confit and caramelized onions, but if i close my eyes and take a bite i can imagine myself partaking in some alien fruit. a new flavor. It's an excellent sandwich, but there's more i can think to ask of it. i'm missing the sharp edges that the arugula and the mustard should be providing. the brie doesn't have much to say. and not enough salt! but not by much. i'm excited to come back here, and i might not order this sandwich again soon but i'll happily recommend it. || derek
