I think this is Aspicilia cinerea but it’s sort of unclear…. Usually there’re one to three pits per polygon but this one seems to have several. Maybe they become separated by cracks later on. Iizunayama Park, Komoro, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

Ah, that makes Circinaria calcarea (Aspicilia calcarea) more likely than contorta. I really should have learnt not to attempt these from a photograph by now!

First question with these is what substrate was it on as that can be very relevant. Purely from the image I'd be considering Circinaria contorta (Aspicilia contorta subsp. contorta) rather than Circinaria hoffmanniana (Aspicilia contorta ssp. hoffmanniana) or Circinaria calcarea (Aspicilia calcarea)

Here's a nice close-up of some lichen. I love observing tiny crustoses because up close it looks like the surface of an alien world!

Circinaria (Aspicilia) calcarea on limestone plinth, London, England. Heavily mollusc-browsed but still recognisable with its chalk-white thallus and grey prothallus. First record for Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park, ~6th for central London. But surely more to be found on limestone structures in city.

Thanks, Graham. Acarospora impressula is a red-brown, areolate lichen. Its apothecia are immersed, but they appear more like those of Aspicilia or Circinaria than Pertusaria. Indeed, your lichen looks to me like a Pertusaria, possibly P pertusa, which can atypically occur on stone.

Aspicilia cinerea characterized by deep pit apothecia on surface separated into polygons. When there are multiple pits on a polygone, they may look like a face. Saku-ra-saku Lane, Saku, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

Aspicilia vs. Diploschistes. I think the one of the left is A. cinerea. Lake Matsubara, Koumi-machi, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

How many ways can you be with Rhizoplaca phaedrophthalma?

Probably Aspicilia contorta, sidewalk lichen h/t @Hagukh@mas.to

Aspicilia cinerea. The ones here have one dots per polygon. Very few with two, none with three. Saku-ra-saku Lane, Saku, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

Lichens! I illustrated these as Artist-in-Residence @ Glacier Nat'l Park & Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park. One isn't allowed to collect specimens in a NP, so I noted the exact placement of the rocks bearing these specimens, brought them to my cabin to paint, then carefully returned them to their home. #sciart

Mysterious crustose lichen colony. Diploschistes or Aspicilia, but can't really tell due to the underdeveloped apothecia. The black border on the edge is remarkable. Lake Matsubara, Koumi-machi, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

Sorry to hear you're poorly, Peter! I suspect you don't have Aspicilia. Aspicilia ascus tholus K/I-, but yours K/I+ blue. Tholus seems closest to Lecanora-type (see image). Many genera have this type of ascus, not just Lecanora, but it may help you rule out at least some externally similar species.

Wirth (2013) sends me via the aspicilia key to hymenelia. Lets see where this is going.

Aspicilia, not aspiciella, should go to bed.

Aspicilia cinerea with deep pitted apothecia that give the appearance of skulls or faces. Bit creepy to see this around graveyards. Lake Matsubara, Koumi-machi, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

🫤 I have very little confidence with Aspicilia/ Circinaria. Amongst many others.
January 8, 2025 at 12:31 PM
Circinaria (Aspicilia) hoffmanniana, Bungay, TM38/VC25 E Suffolk, England. Common but under-recorded! Only recognised as own species in 2016. Can be confused with C calcarea. N-tolerant: you'll find it even in urban and agricultural areas. New field notes to help! aspenecology.com/circinaria-a...

This is the bulk of species ID'd in my study. Might be missing one or two, but I'd have to dig through a bunch of table to find which ones. 1/2
Acarospora contigua
Aspicilia caesiocinerea
Diploschistes muscorum
Lecanora rupicola
Lecidea atrobrunnea
Lecidea tessellata
Pseudephebe minuscula

Perhaps Circinaria caesiocinerea (Aspicilia caesiocinerea) - but without detail of habitat, rock type and chemistry that's just guesswork
